#1, that I had to overcome myself.....Smoking too fast. Changes the flavors for the worse, heats up the cigar, and can affect the burn. About a puff a minute seems to keep my cigar from getting hot-boxed.

Yeah thats one I also have overcome...

another: worrying too much about humidity.....people (like I used too) obsess over 2 to 3% RH..... people need to chill and enjoy the hobby and not worry so much...after a minimal amount of time....it just hppens...RH is the least of my worries now.

putting a half smoked cigar back into the humidor. That is very bad, it makes the humidor smell bad.

I don't even worry about 5% swings anymore.

Re: Common Cigar Mistakes?

Ok, I don't think this is common problem. But my very first cigar purchase I made, having never cut a cigar before for myself, I lit the cut end. And was confused why I wasn't enjoying it as much as the last cigar I smoked, that a friend lit and cut for me haha.
Thankfully thats the worst n00b mistake I made lol.

Re: Common Cigar Mistakes?

All great tips so far.

1. Avoiding bundles to build up your collection - see No. 2

2. Avoid any crappy cigars - they'll stay around forever & never get smoked

3. Giving your friends or non-smokers crappy cigars - they'll hate them as much as you, and you'll never convert anyone into the hobby if all they've had is crappy cigars (that they don't like, just like you)...

Storing flavored and non-flavored cigars together. Assuming a cigar is strong because it has a dark wrapper.

Joining this community! Now I know all the good retailers and when all the deals are going on. As a result my card is always being used. Thanks CS. Needless to say I haven't learned from my mistakes.

Re: Common Cigar Mistakes?

Everything mentioned are all mistakes I have already made (except the grape Swisher)!!!

My most recent discovery is not dry-boxing adequately - especially for cigars that benefit from it (most/all the Pepin stuff and anything with a lot of corojo or criollo).

I don't get OCD about RH of the humis anymore, but dry-boxing (especially down here in LA with high humidity) is a must for improving the smoking characteristics and flavor of most of my sticks.

Cheers (Good post)
