Fresh brewed by what method, R'is?

Every type of coffee that I've used makes a good drink with the Viet dripper; it makes a very strong extraction and conventionally dripped coffee will not be its' equal in my estimation (if that's what you mean). The same drink substituting Viet drip with a double espresso or a few ounces of mokapot brew is very good but, still, not quite the same.

Gee. It took me days to come to those conclusions. You are a much quicker study than I.

Glad you made the home folks happy.

An extraction from a little Viet dripper is pretty intense. My guess is "blah at best" with a conventional dripper. Lemmee go do some math and come back with 2nd thoughts.

I brew my coffee strong. On weekends, I brew a pot of coffee and put what I did not drink in a pitcher the fridge for Iced Coffee. If you just pour hot coffee over Ice, it will not be strong enough once the ice melts.

A double espresso shot or the Vietnamese method is great for an Iced Latte. I like my new toy thanks to Mr. Moo's suggestion.

Sorry for the delay; I had to suck down the last of some Full Virginia Flake in The forum Pipe (what a gem), hiss the cat off the dining room table, check on my wife, wash a few dishes and, finally, do the math and think on the subject for 30-seconds. Hey! You get what you pay for around here.

The math: regular drip or press coffee uses a rule of thumb starting point of 1T of medium/coarse grind per four ounces of water. That barely makes a cup of coffee I like. My co-workers would spit it out as way too strong. They are beyond help.

The Viet-filter takes two level tablespoons of finer than normal grind with four onces of water extracted over 10-minutes; or, in brief, a heftier shot of coffee than a normal press or drip by a factor of at least 2x.

Your normal dripper would not do the job even if you doubled the coffee; it probably will not extract coffee of sufficient strength to make anything close to the mark. I idly speculate that as a starting point for someone who wants to explore the possibilities, a french press, doubled up on coffee volume and stretched out to five minutes or ten minutes might make something that'll pass. Or it might make something horrible.

I say spend the $4.95 on a Viet filter, get the little drippie-show and enjoy the drink. Or, get a small french press and get creative. Keep us posted.

This has been a public service announcement from Mister Moo. No coffee was harmed in the making of this idle speculation.

Try an asian supermarket or import company. They are not that hard to come by. Any city with a decent size Asian community will have a store that will sell them.

And the instructions are great. Mine closed by saying "Taste the fragrant."

Ice coffee with milk - my favorite!! I always order it with a bowl of pho with rare beef and a side order of fried eggrolls.

You crazy kids and your Vietnamese Drip Iced Coffee...

The stuff is cheap to make and tastes SOOOO good that it's easy to overdose. That little filter does suck the caffeine outta the grounds - mind the jitters after having two or you may...

Man! I'm glad this thread popped back up.

I tried to make Vietnamise packaged coffee in the moka pot and add it to condensed milk for a mediocre result. This looks like the real deal!

I'm going to have to find one of these coffee filters and start making some of these drink!
