I LOVE me some Viet iced coffee! I was introduced to it back in high school. There was a large population of Vietnamese and I got to know all of the "blue collar" kids. I do get it from time to time at a good resturant. Never thought of making it myself.

I got mine there - thanks for the post. The ten-pack is a good deal since you need to have as many filters as there are people you're going to serve. The process is too slow to try and make four drinks with only one or two filters. And if you don't REALLY need 10, you can always be a big shot for $4.00 and hand out a couple.

Thanks for that! I just placed an order with Amazon and they wanted like $7.50 for the filter but $7 for shipping. I just ordered 3 from quickspice for only $16 shipped Can't wait to try this stuff!

Should the grinds be falling into the tumbler? I'm using just some store bought right now so it's pre-ground.

Ground coffee falling into the tumbler thru the filter? I would not think that was possible... UNLESS!

1. It may be you have early-onset Parkinsons Disease, delirium tremens (DT's) or you are losing your eyesight and mistook the tumbler for the filter. I have experienced two-out-of-three and am sympathetic in any case. That reminds me of the old Baptist preacher who kept peeing the the refrigerator at night but later for that - it is a bit off track.

MEDICAL ADVICE FROM ANOTHER SOURCE: "You can develop a tremor from fatigue, stress, anxiety, or even rage. However, an ongoing tremor that is not associated with a change in your emotional state may be a sign of an underlying medical condition and should be evaluated. You may learn, as many do, that your tremors are perfectly normal, but eliminating medical reasons for the shaking is important. It is especially important to have tremors evaluated if body parts other than the hands are involved, like your tongue or head, or if you have other types of involuntary movements other than shaking.

Essential tremor is common in older people. Essential tremor is rarely present when the hands are not being used. It becomes most apparent when the affected person is trying to do something, like reaching for an object or writing. It is not caused by an underlying disease.

Another common type of tremor is called familial tremor which, as the name implies, tend to run in families.

Both essential and familial tremors may be suppressed by drinking alcohol. This is a useful fact for making the diagnosis, but alcohol is not a desirable treatment."

2. OR! You bought some espresso or turkish grind which is powdered-sugar fine and might make it thru the filter holes. Didja do that? Didja? Didja? If so, return to step #1, above, and reread the part about "any coffee ground medium"; take two aspirin and call me in the morning.

3. Or something else - something even more sinister. Lets hope your coffee is just too finely ground.

d. BUT! If the coffee is finely ground, or not, try giving the loaded filter a couple of quick finger-taps and shakes over the counter before putting it over the tumbler. Maybe if a few troublesome fines will just shake out then that will take care of the problem.

Bawk?

The "filter" is the actual two-part metal stainless thingie you bought; it has holes in the bottom piece that sits (or hangs) on the tumbler and holes in the top piece that screws down over the ground coffee. If grounds get in your tumbler I have to assume the coffee is much finer than the holes in the metal filter device.

I think I'm turning Japan......errr......vietna.......errr.......somet hing.

Picked up one of these filters at the Vietnamese shop along with some sweet/condenced mild and some Oolang tea. I plan on giving this thing a run tonight. The wife is out of town, so I will dawn my kimona and sandles and give it hell.

Thanks for the info Moo. This would work great in my backpakc kit. I think it will break down enough to fit in my mess kit.

You could mash some raw meat in it, pour through some hot water and make a nice hearty broth whilst on the trail.

Mr. Moo, just a quick question. At the moment I don't have a grinder yet. I'm about ready to buy one so it shouldn't be long. Anyway, I have some coffee but it was ground for a French Press, will that work or is it too coarse?

Thanks

Ja, shure. Super-fine grind is no benefit for this little dripper. I'd say any medium to medium-fine grind, including Maxwell House, Folgers or Eight O'Clock. for example, makes a good sip. Too fine a ground actually jams this filter up.

TheDon is on his game! Good eye, TheDon.

Yes friends, VDIC is right around the corner. If you lost your VDICF (Vietnamese Drip Iced Coffee Filter) since last summer then you need to get around to thinking about looking for it after a while. If you know where it is then it's time to wipe off the dust and head over to the Piggley-Wiggley and cop a couple of cans of condensed sweetened milk.

If you are new to the game, VDIC is a special treat that anyone can make - it tastes fantastic and costs only dimes per serving. The actual brewing apparatus costs less than $5.00. Great summer coffee - easy entry.
