The Official Decaf Thread - more than a tepid cup of Sanka?

Contrary to the subversive "Overcaffeinated Mister Moo" disinformation campaign being waged by criminal elements within the Coffee Forum, I rarely drink more than two cups of coffee (or two double shots of espresso) in a day. I am not a decaf drinker, but that's not because decaf doesn't taste good. I'm OK with a little caffeine (I NEED caffeine) and I surely like the morning boost. I love coffee hardware, coffee taste and coffee prep but I don't drink it by the pot.

For those who are not good with caffeine for health reasons I must confess that homeroasted decaf can be staggeringly good! I have been served homeroasted decaffeinated coffee that stood out as some of the best I've ever enjoyed, with out without caffeine. In more than one case I did not know I was drinking decaf until I was told.
  • Drink decaf?
  • Need decaf?
  • Prefer decaf?
  • Want better decaf?
Roast your own and be totally amazed at the depth of flavor and body that is there to be had. Wake and and smell the coffee, for crying out loud.

I think that is my next step. I used to think of Decaf Coffee like I do Non Alcoholic beer. I have been looking for some decent decaf. I like a cup of coffee with a cigar in the evening, but it makes it impossible for me to fall a sleep before 1:00 AM lately.

My son was dating a girl who drank only decaf (by doctors orders she had to cut caffeine). I ordered some decaf green that was decaffeinated using the Water Process (as opposed to the standard way of using Benzene). This stuff tastes great! I know that Sweet Marias sells WP decaf, for you roasters out there who might need to roast the occasional cup of decaf.

I find it hard to roast a decafe right. Overdone and lacking depth. Might be the blend, i'm not sure..
I've ended up just cutting normal blends with it.

The next bean reload I do, (hopefully tomorrow) I am getting some decaf green for my mom. I will use it to combat her insanity. In small, espresso, or dripped doses.

I think some of this will match my noob roasting skills.

The thing about decafe green is how funky the beans look when you start out. Then when finished they look just like any other . Of course for my purposes I use a FTO Royal Water process Peruvian estate coffee. In other words it certainly helps to start with good beans.

I agree, I use WP Costa Rican Terrazu and it comes out almost as good as the non-decaf.

Hmmm - just saw this thread. Since my little hospital stay last spring - I am now on a zero caffeine diet by doctors orders.

Tristan has roasted several pounds of decaf beans from Sweet Maria's for me - and each and every one has been excellent! I am particularly fond of the Guatemalan beans - with the African's coming in second.

If I'm not mistaken (but frequently am), Sweet Maria's only sells decafs that are Water Processed... and usually from high quality beans.

Good deal RGD that you not only have have a friendly gorilla to roast for you, but one that has good taste to boot!

And you are aware, of course, that decaf isn't exactly no-caff - right?

Cold brew is cool. Maybe, if your head ever clears from the absence of caffeine, you'd post a thread about your experience with the Toddy process and the quality of the results.
