A Pack of Roasters Running Amok

Hello roasters at CS, of whom there are now many.

It is now up for discussion to see if there is interest in many of us running the same bean at the same time. I don't envision a competition or even a pass (unless folks really want some kind of pass - face it, it's harder to pass beans than cigars) but a means to compare your results to the results posted by others for learning purposes.

Bean of the month seems too time-limited (accounting for rest time, repeat trials, jobs, families, cigars, etc.) to really learn much without feeling pressured to perform and report; also, I am very espresso oriented which is not the case for most of us here. I'd like to play but don't want to run drip roast week-in and week-out either.

K_Rat suggested bean of the quarter which seems like more opportunity to experiment and report without it seeming like a job.

Your thoughts?

Personally I think that some sort of comparative let's-roast-the-same would be pretty slick. And for a noober like myself I would expect it to be a great learning tool...being able to compare flavor profiles vs extent of roast, etc.
But I would agree that it seems monthly might be more than I can consistently participate in.

Four beans over 12 months; after all the cupping, grinding, roasting, drinking, gabbing, agreeing and disagreeing we finally vote. The irony is, by the time we vote that crop will then be gone forever.

(It's a regular miracle we can still buy quality coffee. I wonder if we can get the trabajadors to starting growing some Yenidje for pipe tobak in the off-season?)

I was also thinking, maybe we could get a little group discount from the supplier of the green. This way everyone gets roughly the same bean, from the same time, etc. But I think ordering from the same supplier would be a better way to start.

Possibly do it the same as in the pipe forums. Ask for suggestions, make a poll, then vote. Keep it all democratic.........wait, will that mean CG wont participate???

If we get 10 particpants on 5#/each buys that a 200# annual commitment. Not earthshaking retirement income but maybe a little leverage somewhere.

Can every man-Jack one of you use 5# of beans in three months?

One bean for all, from the same lot for all, is a must. On the democracy and voting thing, I don't really care.

How about a four bean plan over a year - four continents? I say four continents -

1. Africa (and the middle east, bonus bean)
2. Asia
3. South America and the newly recognized continent of...
4. Central America
