Re: Advice on Brewer

I was absolutely shocked that someone would pay $69 for a pour-over. But then I clicked the link, that's what we call a drip machine. Pour overs are what, $5?

Anyway, it claims to have "several exciting features", but it lacks the feature "makes great tasting coffee". Per many recommendations, if you want a good drip pot, buy a Techivorm ($200). It maintains proper water temperature. Any other drip, less than the Technivorm, you're generally paying for fancy features that in the end don't really have much effect on the taste of the coffee itself. At least the one you posted has a carafe, so that'll prevent the hot plate effect which makes coffee taste funky after too long on a hot plate.

All that said, I'm sure it makes a decent cup, and if you can't find a better price for a machine with carafe go for it.

Keep in mind that Dgar is just starting down the slippery slope of better coffee.

I looked at the link and this is a brewer, not a pour over. A pour over is just a filter holder with some sort of decanter underneath. You boile water on the stove or microwave and "pour through" Shouldn't be any more than 20-30 IIRC. Same thing with a French Press, only slightly different operation...put grinds in a glass tube, add hot water, insert press unit and push down...again should be around 20-30.

Try this link for a pour through brewer

Re: Advice on Brewer

Hi Guys, once again my writting skills are letting me down. My post was a little confusing, I'm going to pick up a pour over this weekend, but I also wanted you guys to take a look at the auto drip brewer I listed, since I thought the price was reasonable, but it sounds like the techivorm is the "way to go" so I'lll wait a little while until I can spend a little more, there not that outrageoulsy priced, Mr Moo was trying to sell me a $18,500 grinder, whatz up whith that

By the way. Mr. Jmurman please PM me you addy! thanks

Re: Advice on Brewer

dgar - i don't have experience with Techworms or any other "fancy" drip brewers. But I have found the Cuisinart Brew Central to be a great dripper. The water gets dispersed nicely over the grounds, the temp is 205F (on mine), the warming plate has 3-level adjustable temp (should you want to leave your coffee in the pot) and it does auto shut off adjustable from 2 to 4 hours.
Now it's NOT some calibrated coffee brewer like the more expensive but it is a HUGE step up in drippers from the Mr Coffee, Black & Decker, etc...at least IMO and from my friend's experience. Mostly the reason I bring it up is that this can be had for <$70 at Coscto and places online.

Just a thought in case you're not so into spending IHT-type money

EDIT:
I should preface ( I mean postface) all of this with a note about your intended usage of the dripper (gawd that sounds bad - K_Rat timer ON).
Personally i use the PressPot primarily for my coffee. The Cuisinart pretty much serves for the wife's timer brew so it's ready for her on the work mornings. Now, having learned what I have over the past months, if I were to want to get a dripper as my primary coffee maker I would certainly be looking at a Techworm-kinda-thingy. But for me it wouldn't make any sense to spend that kind of money when the press is primary coffee maker. I mean, what's my wife done for me lately anyway?

You should NOT want to do this! Friends don't let friends burn good coffee.

The best thing to do if you're making more than a cup, is to put the rest in a thermal carafe or thermos. Leaving it on the burner will ruin the taste in a very short time.

absolutely true - I always remove from heat right away, but I certainly should have expanded more on the statement. I have found that many people, no matter how "good" a method may be, just don't want to screw with it.
Thanks for keeping things real whodat1
