Thumbs up I nailed a roast!! woo hoo!!!

Last Sunday i did the remainder of the Australian Bundja washed extra fancy that I got with my FR8 sampler. Roasted it all at 7 min 30 sec ...right to beginning of 2nd crack. And then sealed it up until today. I had a suspicion that I was both going a little too dark (well into 2nd crack) and trying to grind/brew too soon (2-4 days).

Easily the best coffee I have produced. The bean itself is nothing I have had before so i have no great comparison to any others, but it came out bold and smooth...a dark fairly strong coffee flavor with no bitterness. Flavors hinted at a light red wine and, if you really pay attention, almonds.

LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME

Reading and asking questions up until now, then getting the roaster...it all sounded so easy...and it is. But those first several roasts and then grinding prematurely really were starting to make me think that maybe I just couldn't appreciate the flavors, that I was missing something. Hopefully I can now continue on the road to much better coffee.

Thanks for all the experience and help that's been provided by the Coffee Gorillas . The ultimate was when my wife said to me this morning "whatever that was, please keep it coming."

Congrats my friend. Your eyes are opened.......now send cash to Moo and I for egging you on. Without our daily ribbing, you would have given up long ago and drifted into CS archives................Just kidding.

It is truly a great feeling of accomplishment when you find the niche. Onward and forward my friend.

It's about time, Junior.

Have you made any plans to roast another 3.5 ounces anytime soon? You know, in case someone wants a second cup.

(Well done!)

Lesson learned - let a guy buy you an over-priced cigar...and prepare yourself for the liberties he will take

Actually today was 1/2 lb of Sulawesi Toraja - which smells pretty gonzo to tell the truth. Next weekend anyone is more than welcome to another cup

SmokeyJoe...where's that "slowly shaking my head" smilie?

Fine. Fine. You're back on my Philly's list. Raspberry, right?

SmokeyJoe is known to me and is a very good guy, totally vouch-able. So why do you provoke him with a thread title that sounds so much like an improper relationship with a rib roast? It becomes clear it is YOU who makes these threads go sideways.

Well. Sex with beef and beef-byproducts notwithstanding, I can't remember better tasting coffee than the first few roasts I got right. I had a few pounds of Sumatra Mandheling to mess with; it went the gamut from burned to grassy-underroasted to mindboggling in about four tries. No doubt - it is hard to beat the pleasure of making your own roast, brewing it up and (especially) someone ELSE saying, "EEEEEEWWWWWWW! That is SOOOO good." Congrats.

Worry not... EvanS had already shown his sense of humor and good nature... he bumped my RG last night for my addition to this discussion.

I told him he had found "THE MAN" while discussing roasting and brewing with you.

Now back to the unlikely drubbing of Miami by the Tarheels... who'd a thunk it?

Do tell..."what roaster did you use"....he asked as he approached the edge and looked over?

And why are all the coffee emoticons in the least accessible place (hit the more button and scroll to the bottom) of all of the emoticons. I think we deserve to have at least one in the selection box next to the composition box. Can I get an amen?

Agreed on the emoticons - not everyone has so little to do that they can completely assemble a new one or go hunting for a pre-made with every message

Fresh Roast 8 - quiet, simple....I think it was the right choice for me especially when it cost only $80 with a few pounds of sample beans
