Blending for Espresso
The best espresso shot I've ever had: several one ounce shots of Malabar Gold espresso pulled by Dr. Joseph John himself. Simply awesome. I've tried to replicate those shots ever since. I gave up. I just buy his blend. I've talked to him for hours. I like him. He's blunt, knows his product and does not settle for second rate. Here is a link to his "crash course in coffee science" document.
He states: Typical American espresso contains 5 or 6 different beans, some 7 or even nine beans. Except as a gimmick, this has little value because one cannot discern the last bean of the ninth coffee in the blend." I stayed true to his advice. My espresso blend contains coffees from: Brazil. Indonesia. Vietnam. Africa. ![]() Wanna pee in the tall weeds with the big dogs in the awesome world of espresso? Create your own blend? Don't fool around. Get this book. It is excellent. Check out the author's site: www.coffeereview.com. Do check it out. Run amok. Run free. Do the unconventional. Coffee imagination creates coffee reality.

Re: Blending for Espresso
Ah! I was taking the lazy way out by just purchasing blends, not creating my own...Now I feel like the cat.

Re: Blending for Espresso
just made a trade on another site for 5 lbs of Malabar Gold.
can't wait to roast it. Mostly I do S.O. when it comes to espresso, my attempts at blending are........let's not call it dismal, but you get the idea ![]() thanks for the tip Norm, maybe I'll do a little reading. My experience is that blending for espresso is more difficult than blending for press or drip. Want to place an order for Metropolitan's Green Line blend of espresso, have heard good things about that. I wish Intellgentsia sold their Black Cat green. Oh, and I still have to try the Black Pearl from my friendly Chris' Coffee Service. Since I'm local I'm hoping they may be willing to sell me that green as well ![]() |
