Hey buddy... Cool your Jets!!... I mean... Beans..

I have been wanting to post this for a couple weeks, since Tristan and I made SC/COs and kept forgetting.
I had read about guys using 5 gallon pails and Shop-Vacs to cool beans, however, I didn't want another single tasker 5 gallon bucket in the garage, nor do I currently own a Shop-Vac. This particular solution fits very nicely on a shelf, and is low profile. I had been using the "air compressor and a sieve" method, and that works very well, but you end up spraying beans around the garage on a fairly regular basis. I saw a oil pan that I wasn't using and the dim little light bulb in my brain went off when I saw the spout size. Tracing around the mesh sieve I was using for a cutting guideline, I cut the hole. The plastic is pretty dense, so even with a sharp utility knife, it was slow giong. I ended up "plunge" cutting the width of the blade around the circumference until the circle popped out and neatly trimmed the edge. I would recommend you size the cutout for the sieve that fits your average roast size, having a vacuum suck air through metal mesh isn't very efficient. I got lucky and the size of the sieve I have fits a SC/CO batch very nicely. The end of my Hoover extension nozzle fits nice and snugly inside the spout opening, making for a quick, no duct tape or fiddling around with it arrangement.... Simple... like me. One of the nice things about cooling your beans this way is that you can dump the beans, flip the vac on, and walk away, to get another chilled beverage, cup of coffee, or prep your next batch. Beans get pretty chilly in about one minute. you can grab the oil drain pan at Wal-Mart for about 8 or 10 bucks.

This is what I'm talking about! I've been road testing this device for a couple weeks and it's so mint. No more muss and fuss with metal bowls swishing coffee around for up to 5 minutes, no sir!

Huge kudos to Pete for this invention!

Engineering note of interest: if beans do not fill the strainer TO THE TOP OF THE RIM, air will pretty much flow over and around the beans without actually cooling them dow very much. So I learned. After I set a strainer into a metal piece. And figured out the problem after it was a bit late. Darn it.

yep. Takes longer to cool a small WBII batch than a full SCCO batch. That's why I suggest taking your roast size and finding a sieve that will be filled to the top with that. It works a "little" better to kind of dish the beans in the bottom, spread them up the sides if you can, for a smaller batch size. Other than that, our old friend, Duct Tape, to the rescue. wrap a section around the exposed mesh on the outside of the sieve to help air flow through the beans. Easier than fabricating a metal collar.

I'm not sure about that "old" friend part. I am watching you thru my one good eye, Re'cant-gent.
 • I tried duck tape (wak-wak) and it got gooey - not at all the ticket for my arrangement;
 • moved on to 2" wide aluminized foam-backed tape inside the strainer as space filler - it got gooey;
 • tried the aluminized foam-back tape inside AND outside the strainer and it has more or less clung to itself while making a half-decent gasket between the strainer and the metal top of the barrel it rests in.
Weird details, these.

The tape that might work best would be the aluminum duct sealing tape, maybe? I haven't needed to perform this operation, but one strip on either side, sticky bits facing each other in a donut shaped arrangement under the rim of the sieve might seem to work... It has no foam to get all funky, just aluminum, adhesive, and maybe a plastic layer to lay those on. Definitely one of those, "measure twice, cut once" instances.
