Behmor 1600 First Roasts

Roasted two 1/4lb batches last night.

1) I just set the Behmore to it's default settings and let it go. It went to the first crack but maybe not finished. Beans are light in color but smell good. I brewed a little this morning and its good but very light.

2) I went 1 min longer, FC finished and I don't believe the SC started. Beans are much darker and smell a little stronger. I brewed a little this morning also and it is definately stronger, you can tell it's the same beans but with a kick/bite. I like strong coffee and prefer this one and the next batch will go longer.

this is going to be fun, kind of like when I started with cigars. Trial & error finding my likes and dislikes. I'm not sure but it maybe cheaper until I get a new grinder, brewer, esspresso machine......shit who I'm I kidding my addictive personality is going to send me to the poor house. If I can smoke and drink there I don't care.

Re: Behmor 1600 First Roasts

I got my friend, Kent, into home roasting a couple of years ago. We've always used various popcorn poppers as roasters.

A couple of weeks ago, he gifted a guy some coffee for a good turn he did for Kent's Son. The guy was so impressed, he gave Kent an $800 order for coffee to give to this guys customer's for Christmas. Kent had $400 worth of expenses for coffee and bags, so he bought the Behmor and 15 pounds of coffee with his profit. AND he got an additional 8 pounds of coffee as part of the Behmor promotion.

He loves it, BTW. He's doing 18-20 minute roasts. And he says it's a thrill to be able to pour a pound of roasted coffee out of the hopper after the 1/3 of a cup routine us pop-roasters deal with.

Re: Behmor 1600 First Roasts

Mine is working well so far. I can have a hard time hearing first crack, but second crack comes through plenty loud. I have roasted a couple of pounds now and it has done a great job. If I had a minor complaint, it would be for a longer roast cycle. I do not have the best voltage in my house and some beans just take a little longer. I need to try to find a better outlet than those in my kitchen.

But all in all, it is a great unit. But if you want to roast into French or Vienna roasts, it looks like you will need something else. I have a pound of Yirg that I roasted to City + that I am bringing to work tomorrow. Looking forward to trying it out!!!

Roast 1/4# @ 1/2# P1 B, you will go plenty dark.

Is 20-minutes getting a little long for a roast; are there negatives associated with what seems like longer cycles?

Re: Behmor 1600 First Roasts

So I have come to the conclusion that it is easiest to enter 1# in for all roast I do. This way I have the max time allowed for any profile I choose and can input the time I want. So if I want to roast a 1/2# of Sumatra at P1 I am maxed out at 13:30 min at the 1/2# P1 profile and I can't get this big ass bean to 2C, well I enter 1# and back the time off to where ever I want. I like 1/2# of Sumatra roasted at P1 for 150 to go as dark as I want it, FC+. This works for all the profiles very well. I haven't done all math yet but based on the few experiments I have done after fine tuning a bean in on a certain profile there is a tone of manipulation you can have over the profile itself.
The Behmor is not only idiot proof right out of the box but it seems to let a user grow their obsession to a ridiculous degree .
