Hybrid press-pot-pour-over

Press pot
+The steeping really seems to get the best flavor out of the beans
-I get nasty silt in my cup.
-It's a pain to clean the screen when done.

Pour over
+No silt
+Allows perfect temp control
-Takes too damn long to babysit and pour water over it

I propose this:

-Take water just off a boil. Dump grinds right in, stir and steep as in press pot. Decant into pour-over filter, leaving most of the grinds in original pot so filtering is rapid.
-Voila, press-pot taste without the silt. Madness? You be the judge.

Re: Hybrid press-pot-pour-over

Clogged screen and excessive silt sounds like too-fine a grind o/or a grinder that is making too much dust. Dare I ask? How grindeth thou? This is not an issue with a Mazzer, for example.

If a high end grinder is not in your future and the problem is what the problem is, your idea sounds interesting. Tried it or just thinking outloud?

I must confess to the whirley blade. Makes a french press pretty much pointless, more like turkish style in the second half of the cup.

Right now thinking out loud, I don't have a manual pour over yet to try it.

Whirley mostly means paper filter to me. With freshroast, that's not a bad thing.

Re: Hybrid press-pot-pour-over

I used to have a devil of a time cleaning my press screen..............

until I discovered that the shaft un-screwed, and the press came apart into three sections. Man, that made clean-up much simpler!!

While this may sound like I'm a moron, The french press was given to me without any instructions, and was the first I ever had. Usually, I will try and take apart about anything I get my hands on, just because. Never did with the press. Purchased a new one for Ninja in Arizona. It had instructions, and came apart. When I made it back home, tried mine, and it too came apart!!

I'm slow, but I'm still here.

Don't tempt me!

The geek within me is inexorably drawn to the mechanism behind the vacpot, but I'm trying to simplify my life, not make it more difficult. I'm trying to maximize my taste to price/cleanup ratio and manual pourover wins hands down here.

How true - but swallowing a couple of tablespoons of Maxwell House crystals from the jar and then drinking water from the faucet has a very low cleanup-to-taste ratio factor.

C'mon, c'mon... it's only a vacpot. If it's too much bother just put it on ebay after a few weeks. Huh? C'mon. Am I right? Am I right? AmIrightamIright?

Re: Hybrid press-pot-pour-over

I knew there was a reason why I didn't buy a vacpot, now I remember. From part two of your Vacpot series,

"The vacpot depends on a decent burr grinder set at medium- to medium-coarse. Fines in a grind will end up as sediment in the cup or, worse yet, will gaum up the filter and stall the trip from north to south."

My whirleyblade is doubtless going to be unsuitable for this.

N'on - yez need a burr mill or yez is a non-vacpotter. It all starts with a good burr mill except for Folgers in yez cup.
