This is a discussion on Paper Filters within the Coffee Discussion forums, part of the Coffee Forums category; I am using Merlitta paper filters. Which are the better of the two, Brown or white? And why? Thanks!...

Re: Paper Filters

I'm pretty sure the only difference is the white filters are bleached and the brown are not. Some say the bleached variety can affect the taste of your coffee, but I never was able to taste a difference

Try taking a bleached and a brown filter, roll them up tightly, then soak submerged overnight in a vinegar/Tabasco Sauce saltwater solution plus a few drops of chlorine bleach and teaspoon of alum powder. Then take them out in the morning and suck on them and chew them up real good, one at a time, and see if you can tell the difference that way. That's the correct way to taste-test them.

Otherwise, I too think the difference is in what the paper filter salesmen say.

Re: Paper Filters

The big difference I notice is I will throw the brown in the compost pile and I will not throw the white in it.
