My first ROAST! Mega-post w/pics

The iRoast came in and I went to Iowa Meats in San Diego to get some beans since my Sweet Mary's order won't be in until later today. They have a roaster at the meat hut and were kind enough to give me a pound of Sumatran beans for a whopping $1 less per pound than their roasted beans. Well, I had what I needed and I hurried home. Roast or die!

Here's dems beens. Do they always look this "special?" :

And the iRoast (don't pay attention to the red-herrings in the background ):

The iRoast holds 1C of beans. I really should roast by weight but whatever. I decided to follow the iRoast instructions for this first roast.

I conned my wife into letting me do this in the kitchen. Bwahahahaha! The beans flow down into a V shaped bottom and then get launched up and back and deflected out to the sides. I thought it was pretty bad ass. The smell was intensifying.

Soon after this pic was taken the smoke alarm started going off and the wife was choking and getting ready to beat me. I was on a mission and was taking this to its bitter end. She'll get over it. I had decided to run the preset#2 but realized that I wouldn't have anything but charcoal left in there if I let is run its full course. I stopped it with 2:30 still left to go! Good thing.

Rewind. The first thing I did before using the iRoast was roast some beans in a skillet on the stove to observe the different stages. Here is a pic of the pan roasted beans, the iRoast beans, and some Uncle Beanz. Guess which is which...

In the end I ended up with 1 C. of baller beans, a pissed wife, and chaff everywhere! Here's the beans in all their greasy glory.

I just finished drinking a cup and, DAYUM! So tasty and very roasted. ha haha. But, not bitter at all. Just a full-bodied, roasty delight. Next time I will stop the roast a bit earlier. The chaff was miraculous in its ability to get everywhere. The smell of the roast is deeply embedded in the walls of my apartment and my wife's mind. Outside like the dog that I am next time.

Grazie, CS!

Congrats on your first roast, recently ticked off wife, funky smell, and new I Roast. You're one of the "in" crowd now. So I don't get a funky smelling ticked off wife, I roast in the garage.

Very encouraging display of roasting prowess. The macro photography is top notch and your comparative groups speak to your thoroughness.

Re: My first ROAST! Mega-post w/pics

Awesome, I'm about ready to start roasting myself I think, although I know nothing yet.

On a sidenote, I was working at a new coffee shop in NC this week doing some computer work for them. The guy who started it owned a coffee place in Chicago that was eventually bought out by Krispy Kreme. He then was VP of beverages for them and helped build an $8 million roasting facility. He has since left KK and now is starting his own place again. One shop, freshly roasted beans. Pretty cool guy and fun to see the work he put in.

I think it is a right of passage to set off the smoke alarms with a new Iroast. I did just the same thing as soon as I got mine . Looking good.

I toured the KK roasting operation and met their roastmaster a few years back. Stunning facility. What was this fellows name, if I may ask? Where's his new place going to be?
