Mazzer Mini Madness

Mazzer Mini'ers - did you know that a plastic Tropicana bottle makes a good storage jar for beans and a Mazzer hopper with it's whippy little shut-off slider is a great way to funnel one full without a spilled bean?

Did you know about the 6# non-electric spring scale at Target for weighing your beans - or anything else? It's cheap, measures to the ounce very accurately and the basket lifts off the scale and makes a good measuring bowl, too.

Did you know a 9-ounce Solo drink cup with a rolled edge makes a practically perfect, practically free, volume reducer for your doser? Just cut out six small notches with a scissors and drop it in. Lasts forever. Removes or installs in 1/2-second.

More wicked coffee brilliance from Mr. Moo.

Quick question: Why do I want to reduce volume in the doser? I only put in the beans I'm grinding at the moment, and keep the rest in their original Intelligentsia coffee bag, which is always inside a sealed zip-lock bag.

Hiya Cobes! man - you are stealthy but must read everything. Hey - my kid got a job with 99.9FM all sports radio in Raleigh (reporter) - he's in heaven - lotsa basketball games around Raleigh, if you hadn't heard.

Here's why I like the reducer with the Maz-doser.
  1. it's cheap
  2. it works perfectly
  3. when I makes espresso it's usually 2-4 shots. For a small run like 1-4 shots worth, a lot of the grounds (relatively speaking) are scattered all over the doser. With the volume reducer, most of what you grind ends up falling right into just a couple of the dosing slots and dispenses without neatly and with less waste. IMHO.
A doser is really meant to operate full-ish. Dosers and home use usually add up to waste in my experience. trust me - the Solo cup is a good bet. If you have a scissors.

Damn my luck, I just broke my last pair of scissors. All I can find around here are the lefty handed type.

I see scissors, knives, and what is that big black handle, a billy club for unruly beans or coffee drinkers?

I was watching the "Giada's Cleavage" show on the food channel last night, and the expresso bar she was in was well stocked with Mazzer's. It was hard to tell which set was nicer.

(yes, that was intentional)

Try to catch everything having to do with my obsessive interests, which certainly includes your coffee-related posts! Congratulations to your son. And to you, for having such productive, talented offspring!

BTW -- I'm using my Mazzer and Anita for four to five coffee drinks per day, every day (not just for me). No question it's the hardest working appliance in the kitchen -- we use it a lot more than the microwave!!

I think you'd like what the reducer does; it'll reduce waste, improve the dosing and make cleanup a bit easier.

I follow you on the hard-working part. I'd agree our Mazzer is paying for itself.

Re: Mazzer Mini Madness

Hey how do you like your NS Oscar? Have you had it awhile? Is a plumbed in version? I have the NS Microbar and like the convince factor but am thinking about getting this NS espresso maker and a grinder to learn a more hands on approach.

Thanks,

Mikes

I've had it for maybe six years, since they were introduced; no upgrade fever whatsoever; not plumbed in but it has quite a large reservoir. And the Mazzer Mini matches the capabilities of the Oscar - or any other espresso machine.
