French Press-Reversal
Long story short, I was setting in a storm water presentation today and had a thought. This product the guy was telling us about was for seperating organics from water runoff.....like you guys care. Anyway one of the filters used a reverse of common practice of gravity filtration. The water is forced up through the filter by the available head.
Some how I got to thinking about how putting the grounds on top of the plunger would work as compared to the usual below. The process would not apply the same amount of pressure, due to forcing downward is against the bottom and upward is against gravity. On a similar thought, a Vietnamese filter works by gravity, as does a normal drip coffee maker. I would also think that reversing the process would allow for taking the grounds out of the press and eliminate the bittering of the resting coffee. Obviously the presentation was riveting. Just an idea that popped into my head. |

Sounds like you need something like a tea-ball... or just make your coffee in whatever and strain the grounds out before you drink it.

Re: French Press-Reversal
I wonder though... as long as your beans are fresh, don't they typically float? And the idea of pushing down is to move the grind through the liquid?
I could be wrong though. Sounds like it would be fun to experiment with. The idea of 'lifting' the device out, and right to the trash sounds appealing. |

Re: French Press-Reversal
I've tried it, it gets a bit messy and the grinds don't all come out cleanly, they have a tendency to fall of the sides of the mesh as it comes up, but then again, I didn't try very carefully. It was actually an accident as my friend used my press incorrectly.
There was a thread earlier discussing whether leaving the grinds in the press actually makes the brew bitter, and I thought the ultimate decision was that it doesn't really affect the brew much. That's been my experience, and I think it has to do with the coffee temperature falling below that necessary to continue to extract from the beans, and also they are trapped at the bottom, so most of the grinds are not in significant contact with the coffee. |

Lies.
Sounds like Kayak has a little to do with Civil Engineering (or Landscape Arch possibly) as I do. For those of you that know a little of it...some of the Storm Water stuff gets beyond retarded . Take a breath and they will change requirements in four of your business areas without telling you Then the fun really begins ![]() At least you're putting those lovely meetings into good use Kayak ![]()

![]() Cut the kid a break Josh -- he was dreaming about his push-me-pull-me toy and he had a coffee idea! He's really a good kid, he hardly ever has a bird's nest in his Snoopy Zebco, and when he does I hear he's real patient until you pull it out for him.

Great thinking, K-rat; but since gravity never sleeps you oughta make friends with it as much as you can. Gravity on earth always wins.
On a more serious note I had heard the Leafhog ran away and joined the Marines. The avatar suggests he is actually at boot camp as we ponder the ups and downs of brewing methodology. Way to go, man. Semper Lunch. I'm sleeping better already with you walking the point.
