REVIEW: Killer Beans, "Electric Chair Coffee"

Just ordered a half pound of Killer Beans, "Electric Chair Coffee" on the web. The package was $11.95 and shipping was $5.75 for a total of $17.70.

At $17.70 for a half pound of coffee and some big reviews on this site, I was expecting the world from these beans. Illy, Peets, Lavazza, Whole Foods or Starbucks is much less money.

I have a Rancillio espresso machine and grinder and the I keep the group head and porta filter spotless.

These beans were average - to nothing special at most. Fresh roasted and robust smelling in the bag, medium dark roast with a medium amount of oil on the outide. There are wholes on the outer shell of the beans that shouldn’t be there. A few of beans were off color too. The crema from the espresso wasn't very impressive and the body was average with Whole Foods' beans. The flavor was a little winy with a little berry tones. Not as milky and rich as the web site described them. If the people who are ecstatic about their beans are really genuine, then you guys better get you heads out of the sand…

I would not even consider buying these beans again, Peets "Espresso Forte" is at such a higher level than these, that I would laugh at someone who spent as much as I did for a half pound of coffee.

I guess I have spent more on less and will chalk this one up as a mistake. Not saying these beans are lousy, but that you have to be a gullible fool to spend that on an average product when superlative products such as Illy or Peets are less expensive.

First off, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I have nothing against your review. For the record, I don't drink Killer Beans, as I have been roasting my own for a while.

I will however pick at something you said in your review. "The beans have holes in the outer shell that shouldn't be there". Well, yes they should. Those holes are a result of the second crack, and since this is a dark roasted espresso blend, beans going into second crack is normal. For the off colored beans, normal too. As I said this is an espresso blend, not all beans are alike. Just thought I would help clarify that for everyone here.

I should've qualified it better that there's a higher quanity of beans like that than on the beans I am comparing it to. Several of the other espresso specific coffee roasts are blends too, it's not just them.

It's cool that you didn't think the "world" of them, but to call me and others "fools" for liking them is a bit over the line.

Besides, how the hell would you know what I like?

I am one of them to for buying them. Have you tried the other brands I mentioned in the review? People are over the line all the time on this site... Sorry if you took offense to my comment.

Re: REVIEW: Killer Beans, "Electric Chair Coffee"

I'll try them in one of my french presses tomorrow. They are probably better suited for that then the espresso machine, even though they are an espresso blend. I just want to blow through this half pound and get back to the other stuff...

Re: REVIEW: Killer Beans, "Electric Chair Coffee"

I guess I had better break down and buy some Killer Beans, and give up on my Maxwell House crystals. Does Killer Beans come in a pre-flavored, pre-sweetened instant coffee form? That way I can make it from the hot tap water, and only have to add powdered creamer (maybe hazelnut, or Irish Cream falvored for that extra "coffee" taste.

On second thought, I guess I will stick with the french press and grind me some beans from ninja's African Assasins package before he returns home from school.

I guess I'm a "fool" also, or maybe just not real sophisticated in my tastes.

Re: REVIEW: Killer Beans, "Electric Chair Coffee"

A lot of the world uses instant coffee, even in countries that are famous for growing coffee, so go figure...

They could call it Liberace's Blend you'd still be all over it because it's that good.

No I most certainly would not. Name means a lot to me. Saying Peet's Espresso Forte conjures up images of designer jeans, hairdressers, and bars with names like man shack or the toolbox.

You want good coffee? Stop messing around with metrosexual blends and get some cuban beans.

I don't buy things on their name, but on their merits. Would you rather smoke a cigar sounds cool and tastes shitty or a weird named cigar that smokes like a masterpiece?

I had a 1 kg bag of Cubita a few years ago and it was pretty nice. Different tasting than what I normally buy. Dark roasted for sure if I remember correctly, more smoky than Starbucks espresso blend. Cuban coffee and rum aren't as great in comparasion to their cigars. I usually purchase just .25 kg coffee beans at a time.

Let me offer you some examples:

If the greatest cigar in the world was called throbbing man meat I wouldn't smoke it.

If KIA released a superpremium car I wouldn't buy it.

If I met the woman of my dreams and her name was Trent i'd move along.

If I was offered Cuban Davidoffs from a friend of a friend that got them from a Saudi diplomat I wouldn't buy them.

You get what i'm saying? Sometimes name does have importance.

Dude, you completely caught me off guard with that post and I now have spewed coffee all over my monitor and up my nose.
