Re: Caribou - Ethiopian Yirg Dark Roast
I roasted my first batch of yirg from the Roasters Run Amuck a little dark and found a nice mix of citrus and dark chocolate. The other Yirgs I have tried did not stand up as nice to a darker roast for some reason.

Might be good if it was icecream...but not coffee.

Re: Caribou - Ethiopian Yirg Dark Roast
Well, cocoa or chocolate aromas in coffee are fairly common, and much like a cigar, a hint of it is more than enough.
Blueberry is a hard element to find in a coffee, and one that comes up occasionally in the flavor profiles of certain coffees (some cup of excellence contenders, as I recall). As a coffee guy, you just don't dig those nuances in a single origin, or you just don't dig cased coffee? (ala snickerdoodle truffle peppermint crunch) ![]()

I am on the fence.. Which is why i didn't say MMM good blueberry's, or ick, blueberrys in coffee??
I like the coffee, but it's more of a desert coffee...

Re: Caribou - Ethiopian Yirg Dark Roast
The hint of berry you get from Natural Ethiopian coffees are their true signature. In the past, we have had Hafursa Yirg, Shanta Golba Sidamo, Harrar Horse Ethiopian Worka and Aricha 7 with this profile. There is nothing like it.
The current Sidamos we carry on the roasted side have these characteristics.

I guess if you lived in the region and that was the coffee you got, the curious flavor would be like the wallpaper and just be part of the background. I found the background berry flavor to be subtle but obvious. It was novel, but not at all unpleasant. If I drank it seven days/week instead of once in my life it'd be real easy to get used to. I was in a pub in Freemantle, AUS, that poured banana beer from a tap. That was a lot weirder than coffee with a hint of berry but, if I was thirsty and all I had was bananas... "Pour me another, Mate."
