dont get carried away...

Its almost christmas, and I'm thinking of gifts. I did the search and really just finding really expensive machines. Im looking for a maker of any sort that will be a good gift for my old man who loves coffee behind his family. He uses a drip b/c he needs a good amount to get started in the morning while watching Fox News. He enjoys the better coffee on the weekend, but he still uses his drip. I am thinking that a better machine to brew better coffee on the weekend where he drinks for taste rather than function would be a good idea.

I saw Matt post some machines, but I am totally clueless as where to start. The one thing I do know is that the machine doesnt need to be complicated.

Help me plz.

Going to chefscatalog.com as I heard they have good stuff.

Re: dont get carried away...

This would be my recommendation:

Presto Drip machine at amazon

This is what I have at home now, and I've given two away. Widely held among the Coffeegeek crowd as the best inexpensive drip machine around right now. Three heater elements, brews at great temperature, the ONLY downside AFAIC is that it doesn't have a thermal carafe, but you can easily get the Nissan 1 qt at chef's for $20 or so.

Personally, I wouldn't buy any other rip machine I am aware of for under about $200 (Technivorum)

edit: Oops - sorry. I think you were asking for non-drip machines. Personally, I'd just go with a good press-pot (Bodum is always a safe bet) which are readily available almost anywhere for about $20. The only other thing you might consider is the Krups Moka Brew - disco'd, but still available at pretty decent prices:

Here's one: Krups Moka Brew

and a review of it

Re: dont get carried away...

Raney, you beat me to it.

I am probably going to buy, or request, the Scandinavian for Christmas. From all my reading at coffeegeeks, it's a good drip maker. Is it the best? No, but it competes with the Technivorms for way less $$$. I agree that you should buy a thermal charafe. As far as using a SwissGold filter, instead of paper filters, I'm finding it to be split down the middle as far as whether you should or not. That's your call. HTH

Not that I'm knowledgable in coffee (I'm just starting out), but the two Raney's listed is the two I'm debating on. As far as press pots, etc, I'm clueless. I drink 95% of my coffee at work, and I don't want the hassle of making coffee while I"m at work. Pour some water, put in some grinds and turn it on. I may look into the other brewing methods for the house at a later date though.

Thems are some very nice reviews for a $40-$50 machine.

If this is the case, you should know that the Moka Brew is not really what I would consider the simplest machine in the world. Setup and cleanup are both a bit more involved than a regular drip machine...

just my

Thumbs up Re: dont get carried away...

Hey Cameron,
I just recently bought the Krups Moka Drip previously refrenced. I can wholeheartedly recommend this coffee maker. It makes great coffee and I can taste the diffference. The only thing I would recommend if you went this way is to be sure and order extra filters. You get roughly 50 with the maker but they are not that easy to find so you might as well order extra. I got 500 spares for around $10.00 when I ordered mine. I figured that should hold me for a while.

This is a presureized drip coffee maker which will actually produce crema during the brew process. The trade off is you cant pull the pot from machine while the machine is still brewing as the pot is locked into the unit till the bre cycle is over. I am frequently impatient and this is my only complaint.

Good luck!
-Matthew.

Just take one as a template, a box of inexpensive cone filters and a pair of scissors, this will give you all the MB filters you need for next to no cost.
