Spiced Coffee?

Does anyone ever add spices to their drip or pressed coffee?

I put cinamon sticks and/cardamon in for a change-of-pace and it works out well.

Re: Spiced Coffee?

I've thought about it, but never tried it yet.

Do you put the spices in when you grind the beans, or add later when you perk/drip/etc?

How much spice do you add?

Re: Spiced Coffee?

I put the spices in the ground coffee and let it brew with the spices. I make a pot of french press in the moning and will break up one cinamon stick and/or add one or two cardamon pods whole. Use half of one if you split it open for the seeds. Since the french press only steeps four or five minutes, the spices won't be overbearing (unless you go for the cardamon seeds).

As for a drip, I would prefer the ground cardamon seeds as little steeping happens.

I think clove and vanilla bean pods could work too. As well as star anise.

Start off the cinamon and then try the cardamon. If you like it, try both! The flavors are not that obvious tasting like flavor shot or using ground cinamon into the coffee cup.

Re: Spiced Coffee?

I recently took a trip and threw my "whirly" grinder in my pack for fresh ground coffee on the road. The last thing I had used it for was cinnamon and nutmeg.....the first couple of grinds (Harra) were indeed spicy and I sort of liked it.

Re: Spiced Coffee?

I tried it this morning, actually I'm about to pour my second cup.

I added a few small pieces of cinnamon from a stick to my french press with some locally roasted Turkish beans.

It's quite nice, though I may add a bit more next time.

Re: Spiced Coffee?

I tried the star anise this morning and didn't like it. Someone else may. I know the cinamon is a winner, as is the cardamon. Just be careful with the cardamon; a little goes a long way.

Cardamom, always, in turkish for me. I have gotten crazy about turkish coffee this year thanks, in large part, to you. Why, this thread just made me think to whip one up. Thanks again.

Re: Spiced Coffee?

As I understand it cardamon and cinnamon + boiled milk in coffee are considered to have medicinal value so to speak in the Ire Veda approach.

I believe the belief is that they help to quit the pancreas.

Time for some coffee!!!

You're half way to making real Chai. For those who want to try the real thing, here's a quick recipe:

2 cups water with:
16 green cardamon pods
16 cloves
7 cinamon sticks
8 star anise
16 black pepper corns
2.5" thin sliced fresh ginger
1 bay leaf
8 alspice seeds

Bring the above mixture to a boil and cover for 13 minutes.
After 13 minutes:

2 cups of milk
4-5 tablespoons of sugar

Stir and let get to near boil. Once at near boil, kill the heat and add:

4 tablespoons of Indian black tea like Dheejarhling

Steep for 3 minutes and pour into glasses via a filter

Top each cup with 1-2 saffron threads.
