My advice is to find a $1.00 thrift popper (or buy an IRoast2 if you want no unnecessary fiddling around) and order a few pounds of central american green beans (Guatamalan, Costa Rican or Honduran) from any of dozens of quality providers. A great first look is www.sweetmarias.com.

I don't recall ever hearing someone say "I bought central american coffee beans and an IRoast and want to get rid of them." Anyone?

Experience is the best teacher when it comes to roasting beans, and here in our little coffee forum you have a wealth of knowledge to ask questions of, from professional roasters right on down the line. Just dive in dude!

I like the title of this thread "Roasting coffee 101 - It's Cheap!"

No it's not cheap.

The beans are cheap...but all the stuff to get them done...well, it adds up.

Kinda like reloading youir own ammo is cheap, except what you have to spend for the inital outlay.

I'm not knocking anyone or anything, as I've just spent a few hundred and hoipefully I'll be able to get my first roast done this week. I have a sneaking feeling that when that fiurst batch is finished, ground and brewed, I'll be just another 'hooked bastige'

That's 'cause you're on the front end. I remember thinking the same thing when I started..."Where the heck is the savings?"
Now looking back over a few years...IT'S CHEAP!

I have saved a lot of money in the past several years - far, far more than the outlay - but in the end it has little to do with saving money and more about adding to the fun of the day and the quality of the cup.

Very True ! I have more invested in coffee paraphernalia than in my automobile, but wouldn't have it any other way. I enjoy my coffee a great deal more than driving ! HA!

If I ever tried the "we can save money on doing it ourselves" she would laugh than take me on a tour of my stuff. I haven't even finished getting all the roasting stuff I want and I am already talking about a smoker...thanks Mike, lol. I will of course need a 2nd fridge to dry cure the meats.

SAVE MONEY, LOL
