Basic Tools

Came here for Cigar info...now might as well get yet another hobby.

I just wanted to see what you guys would recomend as a starter "kit" for the person getting into the coffee world.

Obviously the beans....
West Bend Popper (or variant)
A grinder (what kind? burr? etc?)

What is recommended for a starter pot. It seems the standard DRIP pot is a fo-pah among you guys. So, I have looked into a Moka Pot & French Press styles. But really what should i be looking at as far BRANDS/types etc?

I have read the sticky threads & while they do provide sources for the materials there aren't really any recommendations for the pot.

Re: Basic Tools

I wouldn't call a roaster/popper "starter" gear. Roasting is how to make an easy drink harder - better, but harder. It's interesting but it's a complication. How about:

1. The most important thing. Get a burr grinder. Best "starters" include Bodum Antigua and Solis Maestro (http://coffeegeek.com/proreviews/detailed/solismaestro)

2. Get a Bodum french press or a Chemex pourover dripper in a size that suits/exceeds your daily volume needs.

3. Get some whole beans - any beans - from the grocery store and some whole beans from UncleBeanz.com. Grind, brew, compare.

Starting out you can buy good quality roasted beans and learn your palate. There are HUNDREDS of online sources for roasted whole beans that cover the gamut of coffee producing regions.

Listen to Moo, crawl, walk then run. No sense pulling a muscle at the start!
