What to get, where to get it, and what to smoke with it?

I love coffee, my wife hates it. I am very interested in getting some great coffee with our yet to be used press. What should I get, where to get it, and what should I smoke with it.

Thanks,
Brian

Re: What to get, where to get it, and what to smoke with it?

Try going to your local coffee roaster shop. There are a lot of small shops that roast on site, so the coffee is fresh (very important). Ask the person there for some recommendations. Some places will gladly give you samples of what they have brewed.

A press is a great way to make coffee. I would get a grinder also and grind just before you brew.

In general, coffees from east Africa are bright while Indonesian coffees are heavy and coffees from Central/South America are somewhere in between. Don't take this as gospel though, I've had coffee from two different plantations in the same region of a country taste completely different.

As far as what to smoke...whatever you like. I've found that if you like coffee, it complements just about every cigar.

1. If you live between Emporia and Nawfuk I'll set you up right with this bizarro-good Honduran I've been roasting on my next trip to NAB. First ones free. heh heh heh...
2. Check your area for a local roaster; grind medium/coarse for press or buy a lowend burr mill (Bodum Antigua, etc.).
3. Mail order fresh stuff; Mayorga is very good (and near you). Jerry at Killer Beans is much appreciated here - and others.
4. Roast your own. Thats a long story.
5. When fresh, it's all pretty good.
6. Yirgecheffe is light and floral; Sumatra or Kenyan deep and musky; central americans are in the middle. Honduran - Costa Rican - Guatamalan... all good. Like cigars - try a different kind every week.
7. Any cigar with coffee/half&half and a little sugar tastes great - like cigar and Coke. JdN Antano my 1st choice.
8. Perfect press pot procedures produce practically perfect coffee.

One idiots opinion -

Ok, line in the sand time. I look up to you Dan, you are my Coffee Mentor. Now you let me down. Why would you want to Destroy a grand cuppa by poluting it with Cow and Cane, that stuff makes coffee more like Candy, YUCK, IMHO

If you can't drink it black, then put it back. o

Probly goes back to my first regular coffee experience, Italy, 1961 (10 years old), where b'fast was served with cafe-au-lait. I remember being totally infatuated with the taste and the procedure of mixing the hot milk and hot coffee from two little silver pitchers. It drank very well (still does). I like espresso straight or as cappa equally well - espro to glug, cappa to sit and sip. Sometimes brewed coffee I like black - sometimes with cream/sugar. Go figure.

I guess it helps me find my way back to Florence, Italy, 45-years ago... the pretty, jiggly lady with the coal black hair, dark eyes and covergirl smile. I came from a very blue eyed, blond and fair-skinned kind of community - all that dark hair, dark eyes and olive skin was stunningly different and exotic. She who poured me my own coffee and made me feel so adult... a practically perfect memory - summer morning - patio cafe on the River Arno... fresh baked pastries and bread in a basket you can smell from 5 yards away... baskets of lemons as big as softballs... still the time and sound of horses clopping on the street making the morning deliveries.

Coffee with cream/sugar is not a polluted drink to me but rather a time machine to pleasant dreams and a beautiful place that I have never shared with anyone until this moment. Coffee with milk and sugar; there are many things far worse than that. My brothers, I wish I could buy you all a cup of memory so sweet. Mille grazi!

Espresso I like without sugar, coffee- a touch of sugar and cream.
