As Mr. M will probably attest to, Sumatra is always a good way to go when looking for a lot of body

Ja... shure. What Ole said.

Sumatra is a big, fat, easy to roast bean - cracks are plainly heard and sheds chaff pretty cleanly. It normally looks mottled when roasted - it's not you, it's the bean. Roast to a micro-moment into 2nd crack - Lamar can explain the 2nd crack.

There is also a rabidly pro-Costa Rican element wandering thru here. I am included; I wax poetic over CR for drip, press or vacpot. Also a very large, easy to roast bean. Always good service/quality on CR hardbean from CCM Coffee.

Make smoke!

Re: green beans {recommend}

I just went to CCMs site, took a look at the greens. Prices are something I might be able to swing some day soon.

Taking into account that I am going to roast for the first time, in a PopLite Popper, and factor in that I like my coffee really strong, and Black (no sugar). And that I want about 3 different ones to try my hand at this hobby.

What three beans would you recommend, and would a Pound of each of those 3 be enough to work with?

I know I am asking you to put your brain to work here, but I will really appreciate the input. Remember, I never roasted before, but I am eager.

Oh, and I will be brewing this in a Gevalia 12 Cup Drip machine, with the Melitta #4 filters.

Re: green beans {recommend}

Three beans I would recommend would be:
Kenya AA
Coasta Rican (preferably a Tarrazu)
Sumatra

These three are all very easy to roast with distinct cracks and will give you a good idea of the range of coffee types out there.

The Kenyan is a very 'bright coffee' and I would take it right up to second crack. The Sumatran is a heavy 'earthy' coffee and I would roast it just into second crack. The CR is somewhere in between these two and I stop roasting it short of 2nd crack (full city at most).

Well put......Puro, I don't know much about CCM, am sure they are a fine merchant, i always believe in having a plan b. Have you checked out Sweetmaria's? They offer sampler packs of either 4 or 8 half pound packs each of either (naturally) 4 or 8 different types of bean. Tom does a good job of mixing them up so that you get a good cross section of the different coffee profiles.

WaHooo!!!

I got mentioned in the coffee forum!!! That makes me officially one of the big boys!!

As a rookie having botched more roasts than I care to admit, know that you will go through a pound of beans relatively quickly. I have gone through about three pounds a week, much of which is now rose food.

By way of suggestion, roasting outdoors is 100% easier than listening for pops and crackles over the blare of the exhaust fan, the beeps of the smoke detector and the screams of the wifey.

My recommendations are
Kenya AA (a must have)
Costa Rican HB (another must have)
Ethiopia Yirgacheffe ( good stuff)

CCM is a good place to get a good price on a nice selection and I would order a lb of each for starters. I use a popcorn popper with good results.

I just pulled the trigger on 10 lbs of Kona extra fancy and 5 lbs Kona peaberry. It's my wife's favorite and I love it too.

I must be in the minority on this, but Yirgacheffe just doesn't do it for me. Maybe I just don't roast it right, who knows!!

Re: green beans {recommend}

Thanks guys, I need all the tips I can garner!

Yes, I will be outside. I have to deal with the warden...er I mean wife yelling at me for the stink when I just BREW coffee. No way I could even think of Roasting inside.

Now all I have to do is hide some cash, buy some greenies and tell the warden...it was a bomb, really.

If I fail in my ruse, you guys will be minus one fat Gorilla

Re: green beans {recommend}

If it's a full body roast you're looking for, stay away from all the African beans....work your way through Central and South America first.

Don't forget Newton's law of Cooling and Fourier's Law of conductive heat transfer. It may only be coffee, but you'll need to know these two!

I'm with you on this Jeff. I went through the whole pound, and never could find the sweet spot. It always tasted bland and "empty". I am wanting to get some more and blend it with others. Are you still roasting with the FR8 or did you get another? I'm just thinking it might be the roaster? Just a thought.
