Preferred brewing method (other than French Press)

Hi all,

I'm new to good coffee (home roasted, brewed in a french press). And would like to expand my experience a little. I was wondering what other people's preferred brewing method is if not using a french press, and if using a french press is your preferred method of brewing, what is your 2nd most preferred method? Why? Pros / Cons vs french press?

Also I wouldn't mind some brewing equipment recommendations. If you use a different brewing method, what pot, machine, or equipment?

I'm currently using a Bdoum french press, a Fresh Roast 8 Plus roaster, and a Cuisinart burr grinder.

Thanks!
~Will

Re: Preferred brewing method (other than French Press)

Since last year when my drip coffee maker died I have been brewing espresso every morning with a Rancilio Silvia and ROcky combination. I don't believe I will ever go back! Most brewed coffee tastes insipid and awful to me now, with the exception of good beans brewed in a press.

I would go with a espresso machine. After reviewing countless machines ranging from 100 to over 1000 dollars, I settled on a 100$ delonghi. It can only make one cup, and it takes 45 minutes to warm up. I bought it because it was cheap, and I put it on a lamp timer to warm up while I am sleeping. If you have a burr grinder, you should do just fine.

Vac Pots produce a wonderfully clean cup. The link below shows just a couple of many models available. If your budget allows, go for the Cona.....it does not use any paper filters and is elegant, adding a nice romantic touch to a fine meal.

I was using a keurig machine, and it was very acceptable using the extra bold double black diamond.
However I was down at j and r electronics in manhattan(not jr cigars LOL) and they had a demonstrator with the francis francis x7 iespressor machine.
I took one sip and was hooked. I asked my son, if he though his mom would be upset, but he said no dad, the machine looks like a robot, and shes into robotics.
Greates espresso I have ever had, and that includes all the expensive machines in restaurants and coffee bars. Price is about 300 dollars. check it out.

Much regards Jerry

Re: Preferred brewing method (other than French Press)

In our house its the little 4 cup Cuisinart drip machine that gets us going in the morning. If we have more drinkers, then we will brew a pot in the French Press. My son makes espresso with our Kurps machine, or else he uses the Moka Pot on the stove. That about covers it!!

Re: Preferred brewing method (other than French Press)

krupps thermos with a broken handle, a 10 year old mr coffee grinder, and what ever beans that where on sale. usually store brand. its good enough for me.

I usually end up in the can myself right after too!

don't flame too bad, it gets me going in the morning and that is all that matters.

I am looking to maybe get some better beans that are not to expensive and maybe a french press or some other machine for brewing

I am a vac pot man myself. I use a Hario Deco that I love and use everyday. Sometimes if I crave a cup in the evening I use an Aeropress. I also have a couple of Conas, some Cory's and a Cafex Firestone that I use when company arrives. Love those vac pots.

I use a Technivorm Moccamaster and a Capresso burr grinder - Great coffee results. Quick, easy to clean too. Enjoying some fresh Columbian Supremo at the moment.

Re: Preferred brewing method (other than French Press)

I am likeing the Aero Press when I do not want to fire up the Espresso Machine. It is quick, easy to use and cleans up easier than the French Press. Have a Black & Decker Brew & Go that brews into a travel mug at my desk at work. It actually brews in the sweetspot for temperatures so it makes a nice cup and can be had for under $20.
