Do I go for a new roaster or keep on using the "Were-Ever: Popcorn Pumper". Keep in mind cooling is not an issue when it comes to a roaster......any opinions.

If you use a pound or more of coffee every 7-10 days consider making an SCCO; That'll take about 30-minutes, a few nuts and bolts and a tube of JB Weld. If price is no object consider a HotTop, Behmor or GeneCafe. Or just get a second popper and run two at once.

I think an SCCO is hard to beat, pound for pound and dollar for dollar but it lacks the programmability and built-in cooling* cycle of the GeneCafe, etc. In Alaska, where warranty service on a small roaster might be an issue, that's one more point for an SCCO.

*you need cooling with more than a few ounces per cycle

I have to second Moo's advice. Dollar for dollar you cannot beat the SC/TO. It will reduce the number of roasts you have to do with your popper and mine has been doing a superb job for over three years now.

Nary a hiccup over here, too.

Re: New Roaster or keep on keeping on

Cooling is never a problem with a big enough shop vac. I rigged a bucket and colander to cool the coffee & it will air cool the popper in no time flat.

You make a great point on the warrenty factor Moo. Big pain up here.

I have no problem building/modding things but here is where I get skitchy.........what is a SCCO or SC/TO I really feel a bit stupid right about now.

SC stands for stir crazy. You use the bottom half of a stir crazy popcorn popper and the top half of a TO (Turbo Oven) Here are a couple of links to give you an idea. Oops, guess I need more posts before I can provide a link. Try searching Sweet Marias site or perhaps the Moo man will post some good links.

Re: New Roaster or keep on keeping on

I have been using my Gene Cafe for ~4 years.....wonderful machine with full control of temperature and time (can be adjusted during the roasting cycle) for an unlimited amount of profiles. Quiet, with a chaff filter that is effective enough for indoor use. Built like a tank....and really looks cool in operation. I use mine at least weekly. If the budget allows (~$500); go for it !!

Re: New Roaster or keep on keeping on

I might actually buy one that my wife can use. My Gehto rigs can scare her sometimes lol. but the SCCO idea still seems quite feasible
