I was actually just going to try pan roasting the first few times..is this a bad idea?

I never tried it but know that lots of people do. Make sure you have a good way to exhaust the smoke and keep in mind it will produce a fair amount of chaff. Also plan on being able to cool the beans quickly, 2-3 minutes would be best. Coffee geek forums has some good info on it I believe.
