Money well spent

My Folgers in a drip pot was always good enough for me until I started reading the posts in this coffee forum. But I figured I might as well find out what I was missing so I ordered some roasted coffee beans, a Presto coffee brewer and a Bodum Antigua burr grinder. Well, to hell with Folgers. This stuff is so much better in flavor and aroma that there's just no comparison.
So I'm happy right? Then I got to reading how much better fresh roasted coffee tastes. Here comes the Fresh Roast 8. What a blast! That's all I've done the last three days is roast coffee. Experimenting with the different brands and degrees of roast has been a learning experience but it's lots of fun. I just placed an order for 5 pounds of different green beans and can't wait till they get here. Thanks to all for turning me on to this coffee slope

Re: Money well spent

Let's see:
Mexico organic Oaxaca
Nicargua Matagalpa Placeras Estate Miel
India Matadakad Estate Peaberry
Columbia Huila-Palestine micro region
Indonesia Flores Bajawa Highlands
Timor FTO peaberry
I just ordered some Australian and Jamaican Blue Mountain (heard too much about it not to give it a try) and five different pounds of coffees from Sweet Marias.
I'm still trying to find my "favorite" but so far they are all good. Losts of different flavors.
Also roasted some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe but didn't really care for it. Too much of a nutty, malt taste for me.

It looks like you'll have a great time experimenting. I'm gonna have to take a leaf out of your book and try lots of different types to see what I like. Like with cigars, its huge world of different flavors and blends etc.

P.s...you are the official new owner of my FAVE avatar!

Congrats on joining in the fun. Woo hoo. It took me decades to figure out that my coffee sucked and to move on to the exciting, fast-moving, low-paying world of making it better. But man, when it's good, it's good - and it's very cool to know you roasted it yourself (when it's good, anyhow).

Have to tried the Presto (Scandi?) and your old dripper with your previous commercial coffee for comparison? I'd be real interested to see what, if any, difference you notice.

Welcome to the wonderful world of roasting. Fun isn't it? For me it's as much of a slope as cigars.

So far all I've run through the Presto has been fresh roasted but now you've got me thinking. I'm gonna run a basket of Folgers through it later today just to see what the difference might be. A couple of things with the Presto...the coffee is much hotter and will stay on the hot plate for two hours without burning.
If and when the Presto dies I've got my eye on a Technivorm.

Yeah it is! I've spent more time researching green beans lately than I really need to but it's a whole new world to me. All the different beans from all the different countries. City, city+, full city, etc...all the different roasts. I'm really getting a kick out of it.

Not a big Yirg fan myself! Sounds like you are definitely starting down the home roasting slope!

Re: Money well spent

Go for it Gorob. There is a huge difference from store bought and you can decide your own roast. Dark and oily, medium brown, and all the different flavors...mmmmmmmmmmmm.

Re: Money well spent

Everyone who doesn't normally roast yirg needs to roast some every once in a while to keep humble - except maybe Whodat1, who found the keys to the palace, somehow. Jim makes it sound like he can hit the flavor zone (which is about three angstoms wide) any little time he wants to with his mysterious powers to sniff... That just rips me up on the inside.

Gorob. C'mon....

Yirgacheffe... What a fickle variety of coffee. So hard to consistantly get the roast I desire. When its on, it is one of my favorite beans.

Whodat1 must have pulled a Jimmy Page to get that talent.

During the pass I was aware that my roast had an aroma to die for and it penetrated steel plate - unfortunately, the taste in the cup was very flat. Jim (who passed to me) sent a roast that had modest aroma but exploded with the classic citrus and body in the cup. He said he accomplished this by means of... well, he never did explain. Some kind of alchemists code I guess - he weren't giving up any trade secrets. If you squeal, you die? If I ever figure it out, BTW, don't ask.

Re: Money well spent

Believe me, I don't hit it every time. Yirg does keep you humble! The time I sent some to you Dan, I did two batches and sent you what I thought was the better of the two.
