Re: Identify yourself: "I roast, therefore, I am..."
My name is dyj48.
I've been roasting for a week. Now I can't get my mind off of coffee. Everytime I go into the kitchen, I open one of the glass air tight jars filled with coffee. I smell the incredible aroma and just die. I was hooked by these terrible people in a cigar forum of all places!!!! Now I haunt thrift stores looking for popcorn poppers. My coffee maker is a gevelia with paper filters. My grinder is a cheap grund wirlly thing. My roaster is a Hamilton Beach Pumper and now a Westbend Poppery II. My coffee of choice is Kona which is feeling very embarrassed by my equipment. HELP!!! |

Gevalia sells so-so to bad coffee at a high price but gives away excellent coffeemakers. Go figure. I used my Gevalia dripper this morning with the usual fine results. Maybe, one day, you'll postpone a box of cigars in favor of a burr grinder. If you stick with homeroast, Gevalia dripper and whirley blade (do you "shake and pulse"?), however, your coffee should be very, very good. IMO. ![]()

Re: Identify yourself: "I roast, therefore, I am..."
My friends,
Just roasted my first batches today: Ethiopia Idido Misty Valley. City roast (I think) -- a bit past first "crack" on my air popper. Good stuff. Very fragrant and tasty. No high tech equipment yet--just my imagination. I didn't get any oiliness on the beans and they didn't get very dark in color compared to the dark-looking beans I'm used to seeing. Is that typical for home roasters of my ilk? Gotta build up some skills to justify buying a pound of the COE #1 Guatamalean(sp?). Coffee--yum. Christmas is coming--coffee and cigars... p.s. What exactly is SC/CO? I can't find it anywhere I've looked (how do you like that qualification).

To quote Mr. Maduroo, Bwaa Ha Ha Haaaa...I know I can't do it as well as Dan, but anyway, welcome to the slope...heh, heh, heh. I think SC stands for stir crazy, a kind of round popcorn popper and CO stands for convection oven. So most of these (oops I mean, we) coffee fanatics use this SC/CO combination, the bottom of the SC round pan and a convection oven top to cover it to develop a larger makeshift coffee roaster. It roasts about a pound at a time versus my popper which roasts about 4 oz. Ok, all you old hands can chime in now and correct me if I'm wrong.... Grasshopper ps. check catfish2 thread on convection oven as there's some discussion of it there. |

Re: Identify yourself: "I roast, therefore, I am..."
hello, although i am new here i recognize many names i haven't seen in some time, it's good to see ya'll again. Introduction- i go by ferdelance on all boards, it's my namesake, LOL . i was a professional roaster before going into the home roasting market, i started my career in Columbia, SC, then went on to become a roastmaster in New Orleans, took a break to work for Peets in CA as a Trainer, before going back to New Orleans to roast more. then Katrina washed me out of NOLA and a good friend (Russ) called and offered me a job at Coffee bean corral , as a cupper, sample roaster, tester, network, computer geek. having nothing better to do i took it and we moved CBC to NC this past year, where i now reside. so in all i been roasting for now on 26 year, yep i am begginning to feel my age these days as well, LOL. it's nice to be here, i see ya'll already been discussing CBC. that's cool, i just want to come aboard a a home roaster, not as an employee of CBC. but i can tell ya'll what's going on from time to time if ya'll want. BTW the UPS check ship is off the site too buggy and as of last night the great pumpkin lowered all the prices for the holidays.
