2007 Jamaican Blue Mountain

So production of this cherished (by some) bean is down 10% due primarily to Anthracnose, Hemileia Vastatrix and the Coffee Berry Borer, which are affecting their crops. The Jamaica Coffee Industry Board is reported to be working to educate farmers in ways to combat the health problems of the coffee plants.

JBM #1 Coffee is rarely found in pure unblended form. If/when you do find it, expect it to be both dear in price and in short supply again this year.

Re: 2007 Jamaican Blue Mountain

I was given a pound of "Blue Mountain Coffee" this year. I was not impressed. I suspect that the blend was that they waved a bag of ordinary coffee in the direction of Jamaica and called it good. Glad I didn't pay for it. At $5/lb I would have felt ripped off.

Your post does make me want to try it, however. I'll just have to look a little harder.

Dude

JBM has had many ups and downs of late. If the price is up and quality down there is always ........

http://www.st-helena-coffee.sh/

Far better IMHO than JBM, but again, IMHO, not worth the premium!

Re: 2007 Jamaican Blue Mountain

JBM has been flat as of late. I thoroughly agree it is not worth the premium.
One of the main reasons JBM is getting a bad rap of late is that any product called a "JBM Blend" can be 1% JBM, 99% anonymous coffee.

Similarly, a Hawaiian Kona Blend is only required to be 10% real Kona, the rest is anonymous coffee. Hawaii Kona growers are currently voting on a resolution to up the Kona requirement to 75% Kona. Under the proposed local Hawaiian legislation roasters can continue to choose to use Kona coffee as a blend component to any percentage that they wish in a blend provided that the blend has a proprietary name. When a blend is to be sold as a blend labeled "Kona Blend" then and only then the Kona componant must be no less than 75% so as not to mislead consumers.

Sadly, Hawaii's laws are not in effect throughout the country. When it comes to these two very high priced beanz, like anything else, caveat emptor. Know your roaster.

The past couple of years the crop hasn't been worth a damn. And ANY blend is even worse!

I have to agree. About six months ago I had the occasion to try a pound of JBM and to say that I was not impressed would be a gross understatement!

Re: 2007 Jamaican Blue Mountain

 • I've never had luck with cost/value with JBM, tho I haven't been particularly careful about sussing out good years and best sources.
 • Similarly, after one extraordinary season with Puerto Rican Yauco it never tasted nearly as good again.
 • I love Kona when it's great but get all deflated when it's ordinary and still $12/lb green
In the end, I'm a textile guy with a coffee hobby, not the other way around. I guess I have a lower tolerence for effing around with exotic coffees than I once did. I am lately very happy to keep one or two good espresso blends running and count on reliable (more conventional) suppliers for beans and blends for single origin drip or vac.

Which doesn't mean I don't read all this jazz and pop for 5-10# of something special when more than one person says, "OOOOOOOOO!!!! The ______ from _________is just unbelieveable this year!!! I am still a sometimes sucker for a coffee thrill.

There's more than enough to go around...it's one of the seven beans I use in my Electric Chair Espresso and have over 1,500 lbs. I think (and I have for years) that it's a great stand alone bean.

Re: 2007 Jamaican Blue Mountain

I don't really know any of you, do I? And who is No'surf, anyhow? He might be schilling professionally for the Jamaican coffee establishment for all I know. This sounds like one of those internet scams. I didn't just fall off the turnip truck, you now.

Someone bring me a few kilos of this green bean and I'll feel more comfortable.
