I knew it... I just knew it.

Ordered tonight - from eBay -- Cousin Art burr mill grinder; from Sweet Maria's -- iRoast 2 and 8-pack sampler.

Another slippery slope.

Re: I knew I shouldn't start reading this forum

You know... I accidentally let my self look at a few threads in here, too. I haven't made any purchases yet (well, except for that decaf espresso from UncleBeans, but that doesn't count). But I've been reading.... and researching... a lot... And that usually leads to trouble! I told myself I wouldn't buy a roaster until I got a better grinder. And I told myself I don't need a better grinder because I don't even use the blade grinder I have. I'm trying to stay away... but it feels like I'm teetering on the edge.

Congrats ice95. There is nothing better than roasting for yourself. If there is anyway I can help, drop a line. Be well.

Re: I knew I shouldn't start reading this forum

Good move, I'95 - welcome aboard. I gotta say the slippery slope thing about roasting coffee, drinking coffee, grinding coffee and brewing coffee (except espresso) is neither expensive nor particularly time consuming. I believe the way many of us roast coffee, the hobby probably produces a monetary savings. Of course the process isn't about saving money, tho; it's about the fun of doing the craft yourself and enjoying the product of your effort.

Not sure what's holding poor old Spooble back. Waiting for an engraved invitation?

Great roasting and brewing gear is not expensive and, the better a quality of gear you buy, the longer it lasts (generally).

I have enjoyed every minute I've spent reading about, selecting, purchasing and roasting coffee as a home-hobby. Then comes the comparing. Then the blending of beans. Then exploring more brewing methods. And, always, the drinking of your results.

It isn't a slope - it's a party!

Don't forget to register in the "I roast, therefore, I am" thread after your first batch.

Re: I knew I shouldn't start reading this forum

1st roast update:

By some twist of fate, UPS and FedEx got in sync today, and I received the two packages I was expecting for this new hobby. Cuisinart burr mill from Ebay, and the iRoast-2 and sampler pack from Sweet Maria's

Here's the pics -- grinder not shown:

And the results:

I used a general roasting profile found on Sweet Maria's site:

340 - 2 min
395 - 3 min
450 - 5 min

The first victims were - Nicaragua Matagalpa Pacamara Peaberry (mouthful!)

The beans were starting to get pretty oily, so I hit the cool-down button with about 2 min to go.

Got the beans in a mason jar with the lid loose. I'll give these a go with Saturday morning's coffee.

I tried to adjust the picture to match what I'm seeing in person, as far as darkness. Those in the picture might be slightly darker than live.

Feedback?

Re: I knew I shouldn't start reading this forum

I too have started reading this part of the jungle. After getting the press from Jinny (thanks ) I realized that there is way better coffee to be had. It's hard to go back to the "other" stuff now. I haven't bought a roaster or a grinder yet but I can tell ya it's gonna happen.

Re: I knew I shouldn't start reading this forum

I love coffee too... and while I feel that I've made great strides in terms of finding that perfect cup (or perfect cups)... I feel that I still have so much to learn... it should be a fun/tasty journey tho.

welcome to the other slope... I'm glad to have so much company down it.
