B'waveDave has inquired on this subject elsewhere and I really felt it demanded it's own thread. There are sooooooooooooooooo many possible answers.

But first, the preliminaries.

Do you ever cover your grinder with whipped cream and chocolate syrup?

I don't see how to play this one without turning the tables...

Dave does your wife buy any expensive home decorations?
"How does that vase make our house $600 better?"
"This Mazzer Mini will improve the appearance of our kitchen much more than that expensive chair rail you insisted on having installed."

Sometimes letting your spouse buy something provides perfect ammunition for a debate such as this. For example, my wife has a very nice treadmill but decided she needed an elliptical machine as well. She asked me to research it and I determined she needed a machine with a long stride length, a heavy front mounted fly wheel, and a magnetic braking system. The machine ended up around $1200

Two months later I saw a news bit on television that people were losing weight by playing Nintendo Wii. When I asked for my $250 exercise machine she didn't even attempt to protest!

Coffee in the cup is cleaner, clearer, and the depth of flavor is more refined.

My brew systems work better, period...

It is to say that under 400 you could find the same qualities in a grinder, yes , but what you will not find is machine that is as solid. A machine that is made to work vs one that is just to have. Kind of like comparing Yugo to a fire breathing merc (M'oo Mercedes)

Re: Wife asked how a grinder makes coffee $400 better.

Matt,

Using your argument is a dead end in my house. I am the one who has a "price be damned" mentality. I am a "buy once" kind of shopper. If we can afford it, then I am game. Jenny, on the other hand, is the "opportunity costs" player. It was funny when we were discussing it this morning. She said that she hoped the result was better than the $4 coffee out in town. This was right after she asked me to send some freshly roasted beans to her brother. She is not denying the purchase, but she does like to give me grief for my hobbies when they come with a high price tag.

Re: Wife asked how a grinder makes coffee $400 better.

I have this problem. My wife cannot drink coffee (GI probs). I love it, but settle for crappy auto drip on the weekends. I want to try a mokapot or a press pot (for cost), but I have read that my whirly-bird grinder might not do anything but make the coffee taste like shirt. Should I grab a cheaper ($50-$75) Burr grinder? or just live with the whirly-bird for now?

I have multiple expensive hobbys and I doubt the old lady will allow me to buy a $200 grinder hehe
what can I do?

I'm not even gonna ask LeAnne for this one! I know I need a much better grinder; and it will make a big difference in our coffee, but this is not an expense she will live with anytime soon!! Maybe when my birthday rolls around!?!?

My little grinder that I got with the iroast works great-but my Presto Scandanavian coffee pot died this morning after a year of service.

A low end burr mill will do fine for a mokapot or press. Low end means Solis Maestro or something in that ballpark.

Maybe you can buy TxMatt's handcrank Zassenhaus cheap if you get him at a weak moment.

Re: Wife asked how a grinder makes coffee $400 better.

Funny you say that. Growing up my grandfather had, (and still uses) a hand crank burr grinder with a little drawer at the bottom. He fires up his mokapot every morning before the autodrip starts. I hope to have it handed down to me someday. The noise from is it is just wonderful. I remember waking to that sound every morning at the farm in Oregon. Man I want to find one of these things. Off to ebay again!!

i'll go one further:

"How exactly is that diamond on your finger BETTER or PRETTIER than a cubic zirconia?"

how exactly is your diamond $2500 BETTER than the CZ???!?!?!? unless you're using diamonds to cut things, a CZ is just as good at form & function as a diamond, right?"

but women just HAVE to have the real thing....

Yeah! What's the deal with those women, anyhow? If you give them one simple stinking single little inch they'll veer off and start thinking for themselves. Jeez! I HATE when that happens.

"Take my wife.... Please. Take my wife."

"My wife and I were happy for 20 years. Then - we met."

"My wife had to quit leaving dental floss in the kitchen at night because the roaches would hang themselves."

St. Peter: Was she a good cook?

Rodney Dangerfield: She can't cook! She's the worst cook in the world, alright? The other night, she fixed alphabet soup - it spelled out "Help!" Are you kidding? What a lousy cook! I mean, how can toast have bones?

St. Peter: Was your wife an intelligent woman?

Rodney Dangerfield: Are you kidding? My wife's not smart, you know? She used to reach inside her bra to count to two.

St. Peter: Rodney, how was your sex life?

Rodney Dangerfield: I got no sex life! The only time my wife makes love to me, there's always a reason for it! Now, one night she used me to time an egg. I'll tell ya', that's the story of my life - I get no respect! I get no respect at all, alright? So, whattaya say, St. Peter, do I get in or what?

St. Peter: Of course, you do.

Rodney Dangerfield: Then, what's with all the questions?

St. Peter: [ solemnly ] I just wanted to hear those jokes one more time.

Rodney Dangerfield: Finally! A little respect!

St. Peter: Come on in.

[ Dangerfield enters through the gates, angelic harmony rises ]

[ dissolve to stand-up image of Rodney Dangerfield with the inscription: "We'll miss you. Rodney Dangerfield 1921-2004" ]

[ fade ]
