Kona taste alike?

I was just wondering if anyone knows of a kona taste alike?

I love medium roast kona, but the price is....well.....about 5 or 6 good cigars a pound. So I am looking for an alternative that is similar. I have tried a Nicaraguan Hue Hue Tenengo which was similar, but had a slight bitterness that is no where to be found in kona.

Hope you guys can help.

Re: Kona taste alike?

Whew. There's good Kona and there's not-so-good Kona depending on this and that. Good Kona, roasted right, is a thing much unto itself in my humble experience. Like JR Alternatives, anything saying it's as good will never be. That's the bad news.

Good news is, there're still about 100 more varietals to try - many outstanding - and all less expensive.

In my opinion.

Who do you get yer Kona from? Is it a blend or straight?

Not being a smart ass....Huehuetenago is from Guatemala. Ironically, Kona typica was first called “Guatemalan” when it was introduced back in 1892 by an Oahu grower named Hermann Widemann. Kona is no powerhouse. And I refuse to pay scalpers prices for overpriced Kona. So, for a mild, smooth cup, I'd lean towards a Brazilian Peaberry or Bolivian Organic coffee.

Re: Kona taste alike?

Kona has a more mild and smooth flavor than some other varietals. I get my beans from the Kunitaki mill, it's 100 percent Kona. It's a wet mill processing coffee for local farmers (almost 100 years old). I then have them dried and processed at Hoalula. But beware, there are others out there selling blends as pure Kona....

Blue sky has some reasonable prices for roasted Kona. Some local folks use them given their prices.

Hoaluloa Coffee Mill is were I have my Kona dried and screened. Their prices are high but are all organic and pure high quality Kona.

Your right it is Guatamalan. I have been through about 8 different coffees in the past 2 months.

I will also give the Brazilian peaberry and olivian organic a shot. Do you have any insight on a supplier?

Thanks

I have bought from konalea. Great stuff, but whooo the price. Maybe I'll give the konabluesky a shot.

Thanks
