I just saw The Clockwork Orange for the first time, weird weird movie but I quite enjoyed it. Are there any other "Cult Classics" that I must see?

Re: Cult Classics

I'm not sure what rises to the level of cult classic, but If you like that, then watch everything else by Kubrick.

Re: Cult Classics

This one is a bit of a newer movie, but i think it still qualifies b/c of its flight under the radar when it came out and the loyal following it has today.

The Big Lebowski

If you haven't seen this movie do yourself a favor and go buy it.

Re: Cult Classics

If you want to see some really great movies that inspired Tarantino's films, check out:

Shogun Assassin and the Lone Wolf and Cub series. Shogun Assassin is the first 2 in the series edited together and dubbed for an American audience in 1980. It's pretty campy, but the original films are real works of art, although VERY over-the-top with violence. Tarantino got the spraying blood idea in Kill Bill from these movies.

Lady Snowblood. This is the movie that Kill Bill's plot was based on. Also O-ren Ishii's character was taken directly from the main character of this movie. Also very violent.

The Yakuza Papers, vol. 1-5. Classic Japanese "yakuza" (basically mafia) movie. The first movie came out a year after The Godfather, and while it owes a lot to The Godfather, the series is a masterpiece in it's own right. It's been referred to as the "anti-Godfather" or the "dark side of Godfather" because instead of presenting the lifestyle in a glorious, although tragic light, it shows the dark, nihilistic, gritty side of mafia life. You can see elements of Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs in these movies (which, by the way, if you haven't seen these two, they should be the first ones on your list). And of course, as with most of Tarantino's favorite films, these movies are very violent.

Samurai Fiction should be another one, although I don't see any influence on any of Tarantino's work. He does say it's one of his favorites though. This takes place 300 years ago, but the music throughout is rock, which adds a nice twist. This isn't nearly as violent, although it still is somewhat violent.

Other cult films would include of course, Rocky Horror Picture Show. Also The Street Fighter series starring Sonny Chiba is very good, and you can find a box set for $10 some places.

I know most of the things I've listed are Japanese movies, but it's hard to name any American "cult classics" that aren't well known. Once they become classics everyone knows about them. Oh well.

"ElectraGlide in Blue"...."the man's" answer to Easy Rider, with Robert Blake in his pre-homicide days.

"Clerks"...Kevin Smith's first and funniest movie.

Re: Cult Classics

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" but only if you go see it in a theater...watching it on video does not do it justice. The audience participation and the whole thing is crazy to watch. Just don't sit in the back row...

The Boondock Saints is a must see for every action lover, I saw someone already mentioned it but I thought I would reiterate.

Re: Cult Classics

The Big Lebowski, right on! I tried to get everyone to call me El Dudarino, but so far no luck. Great movie, and check out other Coen brother films: Fargo, Blood Simple, Miller's Crossing.

Angel Heart is another great suggestion. Good and creepy.

I would throw in Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, Spinal Täp, Waiting for Guffman, Blue Velvet and Trainspotting.

Yeah, grab it.
My favorite movie - I've probably watched it 15 times.
