I watched the whole thing. I thought it sucked. I can see others may like it though. Plot was good. Just a little too slow for me.

Brilliant movie. The locations were excellent, it really gave you a feel for the countryside of Texas and New Mexico. Great performances. Compelling plot.
And Anton Chigurh... between the haircut and the captive bolt gun, he is one of the most memorable villains in years. Merciless and unstoppable, with no beginning and no end he takes on mythological proportions. Saw it in the theatre, need to rent the dvd soon.

Should of put an ice pick in my eye. Would have been less painful than watching that movie.

Great movie from beginning to end. Totally agree that this is the best villian in years. Maybe since the original Terminator. Yea, that good!

It's not a movie for everyone's taste, but that's the Coen brothers for ya. Except for The Big Lebowski, because everybody likes that movie unless they're a communist or paedophile. ![]() I really liked the movie. I thought it did a very good job at showing the inexorability of evil. An average Joe made a decision that had repercussions he couldn't have imagined. Anton Chirguh has gone down as one of the ultimate bad guys in movie history. He doesn't even seem a bad guy by the end but just an unstoppable force. I would have been disappointed with an ending that was 'tidy'.

Re: No Country for Old Men
Well that's the genius, isn't it?
The absense of any music whatsoever, the direction, and how well Bardem plays Chigurh create such an unsettling atmosphere to the point where my girlfriend walked out of the movie twice. Not because it's bad - because it adapts McCarthy's novel so damn well. If you've never read McCarthy, well... he's silent. His novels are the most quiet you're likely to ever read. Makes you want to squirm in your seat. Great book - if you liked the movie that much, I suggest lighting up and reading "The Road" or "Blood Meridian." I read the bulk of "The Road" on an afternoon with a large cigar in hand. |

Re: No Country for Old Men
Joins my list of one of my favorite movies. Ranks up there with Boondock Saints IMHO.

Re: No Country for Old Men
I think almost more than anything, it's the slick sound editing and cinematography that make this movie. In this particular flick, the Coens are masters at creating a surreal atmosphere and villain out of such jaded material. The plot, brilliant or not, is secondary.

Saw it in the theater and thought it was great. I had to buy it so I nabbed it off ebay for $12, not bad.

Cormac McCarthy is a singular voice in American fiction right now; no author I've come across since Hemingway (historically speak) has been quite so easy to read (unlike a lot of Faulkner) while diving so deep into the craft of weaving plot with unparalleled use of the language. His recent Sunset Limited, a novella of sorts in dramatic form, captures the essence of his oeuvre so well: the struggle between (super)natural forces and human will. The Road is magnificent; Blood Meridian is terrifying, much more so than NCFOM. I simply can't put down anything of his. |
