Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his "Filthy Words" routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

Tis a very sad day. I remember the first time I heard Carlin. My dad bought his "You are all desiesed" album and I think I was somewhere towards the end of my pre-teen years and loved Carlin, absolutly loved him. Whenever Carlin did a stand-up special I watched it. One of the worst blows stand-up comdey has probaly seen since the death of Lenny Bruce.

This hits hard. I found him with a "place for my stuff" and modeled some of my humor after his. The man was a genius in his wordplay and to this day when I'm asked "How are you?" I always seem to reply with either "I'm not unwell" or "I'm upright and taking fluids".

George, you will be missed.
