Gun game review X360

Ok, a lot of people requested me to do a write-up of Gun so here goes. Who doesn’t like the Wild West? Shootouts, outlaws, cowboys, Indians, the frontier, prostitution, etc. There is just something glamorous about the days of cowboys and Indians. Gun takes advantage of this and offers up a fun, if flawed romp through the wild days of the west.

Gun plays solid. Controls are fluid and easy to learn. Horseback riding is fun, and the targeting system is easy. In fact I think it’s too easy. There is a big square, way to big. Quick draw is a neat feature. It basically turns you into a total killing machine. Action switches into fp mode and everything slows down allowing you to wreak havoc with your pistol(s). Scores of enemies are easily beaten with this, and honestly it just never gets old. Action can get tense. There is some fierce boss battles mixed in. Overall though, the game itself is very easy. You can blow through the core game in six hours easy. Mission variety is a bit of disappointment however. Many are just generic ride there, kill this person, and collect reward. There are a few standout core missions such as the apache and fort missions, but they tend to be too short. You are free too explore the open world, but there really is nothing to do but mine gold. Freedom yes, but also rather pointless. After the game ends you can keep going, but there is little reason. Fun but oh so short. Little replayability.

Weapon’s are varied and well done. There is a selection of rifles, pistols, shotguns, sniper rifles, bows, TNT, and Molotov’s. Also there are melee weapons. You start with a knife, progress to a tomahawk, and finally a cavalry saber. I found the close-up weapons next to useless, as enemies rarely get in that close. And guns are just more fun. You can also upgrade weapons from parts purchased from merchants. This can really turn you into a killing machine. There is also a scalping knife. It’s pretty sick listening to your downed enemies scream in horror as you scalp them.

The game itself looks ok, but for next generation I’m not impressed. This is the same basic game available on Xbox or ps2, just higher resolution. There is no comparing this one to the likes of Quake or Kong. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not bad just not great.

The sound however is excellent. The score works well with the game, voice acting is excellent (Thomas Jane voices your character), gun effects sound excellent, even the animals are spot on. No complaints on sound here.

Gun is fun and simple. It’s a good game, complemented with an excellent story. One of the better stories I’ve encountered in a long time actually. What hurts this game is it’s shortness, and lack of mission variety. It’s a good game, but it is just as good on regular old Xbox. Hopefully the next Gun will take better advantage of X360’s software. It’s definitely worth at least a rent.

Nice write up! I pretty much have to agree with everything you said there and its the same on the PC. The story is great, the voice acting is done by professional actors Thomas Jane as Colton White; Kris Kristofferson as his father, Ned; Tom Skerritt as Clay Allison; Brad Dourif as evil preacher they just do a great job in this. As you said the game looks good but its far from next gen and it isn't very challenging Im not sure if you've played F.E.A.R. for PC but I cannot believe that game didnt get ported over to the 360 it is by far the best shooter I've played in a long time and its bullet time option makes Gun's quick drawl seem like childsplay and is the poster boy of what a next gen game should be. All in all I really didnt enjoy GUN as much as I wanted to Im a huge fan of the wild west and while happy at the attempt at a western theme'd game the game really just felt to Grand Theft Autoy (This a word?) like to me and It would be a great rent for the 360 Im sure just to bad I cant rent PC games.

Haven't tried fear yet. Gonna pick it up for pc after the holidays. I've heard many people compare gun to GTA. Honestly, it's not nearly as deep. In GTA you a a full populated world to wreak havoc in. In gun you just got 2 town with a whole lotta nothing in between. Plus there's only one hooker in gun!

Gun reminders me a bit more of Max Payne than GTA. The simple targeting scheme is similar, as are the fast paced fights.

Hey, that's what we need. A next gen Max Payne

Re: Gun game review X360

Been wanting to try this as well, probably get it for PC. Seeing as one of my favorites was Red Dead Revolver for PS2 lol
