King Kong - The Movie

Went to see this flick last nite on opening nite with my wife. We were both really looking forward to this movie as the trailers looked amazing. I was kind of taken aback by the 3hours and 7 minute running time but I figured.... eh, who needs sleep anyway?

Let me just preface this by saying I wasn't a HUGE King Kong fan to begin with. I had only seen the original original once and I wasn't that impressed. However this King Kong looked great! The graphics were amazing and some of the fight scenes were just spectacular. The jungle was so lush and vibrant that you felt like you were watching "What Dreams May Come" because of all the richness of the color in the film.

However, that's where Kong's greatness stopped. The plot was boring and devoid of any redeemable value. The characters and their actions were very superficial and you felt like everything they were doing was really just an act. There was no believability to the characters. Hell, the most believable character was Kong himself LOL.

There was some definite "cheese" thrown into the movie as well where I could have sworn at one point that Kong and the lead actress were going to start making out. And the ending was drawn out and overly dramatic like you would find in a third rate Soap Opera. Leave it to Peter Jackson to really draw out an ending to where you're just begging for it to stop.

So all in all, the movie was worth the price of admission for the the amazing graphics alone. However the plot and acting in this movie just plain stunk.

I would have given this movie a 2 out of 5 if it wasn't for the great aesthetic beauty of the film. That bumped it up to 3 out of 5.

Re: King Kong - The Movie

my 5 yr old son and i have seen the original about 20 times or so (i had a special release on vhs - where you press his chest on the box and it roared).

so, there wasn't anything special to the charachters in the first one as well..
i'm glad they're staying true to the movie, with prehistoric animals, basing it in the original times, etc.

Going this weekend with the kids. I am a big fan of this stuff. I grew up with King Kong and Godzilla and all that stuff.

We will see. Hopefully going on Friday Night.

Thanks for the head's up Justin.

I'm not a King Kong fan so I'll probably go see Syriana instead, or maybe Narnia foa a second time.

Re: King Kong - The Movie

I saw the movie last night as well, and I thought it was really good. Some of the subplots didn't really seem necessary, but the graphics were incredible and I thought jack black did really well in his role. The movie flew by for me, didn't seem like 3 hours at all...

Re: King Kong - The Movie

Any opinions on appropriateness for a six and nine year old? We can let a few curse words slide, and some inuendo might make it over their heads, but I don't want to spend more time "explaining things" than watching the movie.

Thanks-

Re: King Kong - The Movie

I thought this movie was spectacular. The effects in it were revolutionary- the CG was so well done that allot of the time it looked fully real. I was amazed. Sure it was a rather shallow story but that's expected for a big action movie like this. The coordination of action sequences and special effects were mind boggling.

I think Doug TenNapel said it best when he said that this movie will kick Speilberg off his Jurrasic Park throne. This movie was much more than I expected it to be.

Anyway that's my input, it's worth seeing, especially in theaters. Even if not just to see Kong alone. The animation on that beast was just crazy.

Re: King Kong - The Movie

I though it was a great movie.

The only draw back was it was a little long. It takes an hour before you even see Kong and the movie is three hours. They also cut out the part when they take him from the island to New York.

This movie had some great effects. The native scene was awesome. The scences with Kong and the dinosaurs were great.

Good movie just a little drawn out.

Re: King Kong - The Movie

I think Peter Jackson thought he had some sort of magical power, like a magical ring, that would keep audiances in theaters for 3 hours. I liked the movie, but they definently could have cut atleast a half an hour out of it, maybe a full hour. I have a hard time sitting through movies regardless. Jack Black wasnt effected by the massive amounts of whisky he drank in any way with the exception of making rash decisions. Other than that, the acting was pretty good. All in all, the effects were cool, the story line was enjoyable, and the setting was very fun to explore. Maybe we'll see a King Kong vs Frodo in the future.

Re: King Kong - The Movie

Although I never really had any desire to se this movie, I certainly don't after hearing several reviews of it lately. I too heard it was slow, particularly in the beginning (like the first hour). My thought was how in the hell can they make this kind of flick boring or slow? Seems like it ought to be action packed or atleast very interesting all the way through.
