Top ten Films of 2007

As 2008 begins to draw to a close and us movie fans ramp up for the tasty offerings coming our way through the next few months I realize that we never did a top ten film thread fro 2007.....SHOCKING!

So better late than never here's XXX's top ten fave films of 2007. Feel free to discuss, disagree with or generally bitch about my pics LOL

And YES I know my top 5 are all drama-fests... deal with it

1. There Will Be Blood

One of the best movies I've seen in the past couple years. Amazing performances by all involved and just a great story.

2. Eastern Promises

The sleeper hit of the year IMO. All around an excellent movie with an unnerving edge to it.

3. Gone Baby, Gone

Make fun of Ben Affleck if you will but his first foray into directing was a winner, pure and simple.

4. No Country For Old Men

It won tons of awards and was a really good movie however I don't think it deserved as much acclaim as it received. Still a solid story though.

5. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

An amazing performance by Pitt and Casey Affleck.

6. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

Awesome performance by Seymour-Hoffman and company. Great story, well directed. Kick ass to see Phillip S-Hoffman in this type of role.

7. 300

My guilty pleasure. Yeah I know its not Braveheart or Gladiator but it kicks all sorts of ass. Besides.... THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!

8. Dan in Real Life

Touching and heartwarming. This movie spoke to me on a different level. A movie about loss and love and heartache. It shows Steve Carrell's versatility as an actor.

9. 28 Weeks Later

I know most will disagree with me but this was the best horror movie I've seen in recent memory. It brought back old-school horror IMO and just delivered on so many levels.

10. 3:10 to Yuma

I know its a controversial way to round out the top ten but I really liked this movie. Great performances.

So there ya have it... DISCUSS!

Re: Top ten Films of 2007

Wow really? You didn't see any of them? Not even 300? Weird.
Get to watching some movies my friend

I really enjoyed Diving Bell and the Butterfly however I didn't think it deserved a top ten spot. It was enjoyable but a little too esoteric IMO for the general population. Its strengths were also its flaws IMO. However it did make the top 20

I agree that it was a bit much for the general public- but I thought the story and cinematography were amazing. I accept, but disagree with your top 20, placement- I have this in my top 3 of last year.

I do agree with your thoughts on Gone Baby Gone- amazing movie with one flaw- morgan freeman was miscast- didn't get the credit it deserved.

Thanks for the list!

I need to see most of those, but I do agree with your take on "Dan in Real Life".

Okay, I'll play! To be fair, I'll remove movies that I haven't seen, and I won't mess around with your order. I'm too lazy to order mine.

Not to mention Viggo Mortensen's outstanding role.

3. Gone Baby, Gone

4. No Country For Old Men

It won tons of awards and was a really good movie however I don't think it deserved as much acclaim as it received. Still a solid story though.

About as perfect an adaptation of a novel as you'll find.

7. 300

My guilty pleasure. Yeah I know its not Braveheart or Gladiator but it kicks all sorts of ass. Besides.... THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!

And I'll give it extra points for the production style, attempting to stay true to the graphic novel format (ala Sin City.) Much better than that bomb "Beowulf"--the only thing it had going for it was an animated Angelina Jolie...

8. Dan in Real Life

Touching and heartwarming. This movie spoke to me on a different level. A movie about loss and love and heartache. It shows Steve Carrell's versatility as an actor.

Not a bad movie, but a few of my other choices below would bump it out of the Top 10.

9. 28 Weeks Later

I know most will disagree with me but this was the best horror movie I've seen in recent memory. It brought back old-school horror IMO and just delivered on so many levels.

Too gratuitously graphic to make my Top 10. I've got a better horror movie below.

10. 3:10 to Yuma

I know its a controversial way to round out the top ten but I really liked this movie. Great performances.

So I agree with 5 of your choices, and I'll add the following:

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
I'm a sucker for spectacles, and this was right up there. Sure it was commercialized as all hell, but I thought the movie was great.

Juno
Deserves all the praise it received. Very well written, uncomfortable & compelling at the same time, and I didn't feel bad seeing it with my teenagers.

Thirty Days of Night
THIS was old school horror, very nerve wracking. It also reminded me of John Carpenters "The Thing," one of my all-time favorite horror flicks.

Knocked Up
Hysterically funny, almost on par with 40 YOV, touching, and it ends up in a good place. This one bumps out "Dan in Real Life".

Grindhouse (Planet Terror/Death Proof)
Generally unappreciated, I think these were brilliant and masterfully executed. Too bad the DVD release had to split them up--they should always be enjoyed as a double feature, although Death Proof is strong enough to stand on its own.

So that's my list.

Re: Top ten Films of 2007

Can I add in Apocalypto if it was released in December '06? I never heard people talk about this flick and perhaps it was overlooked. Seriously amazing period piece (going way back to the Mayans) even if Mel Gibson is a schmuck. Incredible realism, unreal sets, costumes & makeup, good story that a lot of people don't know and should.

It was nominated for 3 Oscars in '07 (Makeup, Sound Editing & Sound Mixing) and it's unbelievable to me that it wasn't up for more and didn't win at least for Makeup. If you haven't seen this movie, rent it right away & check out all the cool features on the DVD on how it was made.

Re: Top ten Films of 2007

Have not seen all the 10 listed... but Think I would agree to somehow find room for Pirates of the Caribbean in the top 10.... then again, I loved all the PotC movies

Another one that really suprised me but not sure if I would fit it in my top 10 is Mr. Brooks.
