Ever heard of "The Tragically Hip"?
So I was at the lake this weekend with some friends and we got to talking about Canadian bands that never made it big in the US. The biggest band that came to mind was the Tragically Hip. For the life of me I do not understand how this band does not make it. I know that they kinda dabbled in the US with some concerts and what not but dang! This band is fantastic! They were in their hayday back in the late 80's early 90's and are still pumping out music. Hell, I've seen them live 6 times and every concert was great. they never get old.
Anyhow, if there are any music fans out there looking for obscure music check them out. Probably the greatest "unknown" rock band to come out of Canada. |

Re: Ever heard of "The Tragically Hip"?
Sorry Jeff, never heard of them. But I did look them up when I saw your post on the 4th. Just didn't have time yet to listen into any of their songs.
Under that 'never made it big in the US' label you could also put Saga , right ? Of course, not for me, being from Germany they were my fav band and Michael Sadler's 'Clear' is still one of my fav CDs. |

Re: Ever heard of "The Tragically Hip"?
I know of this bands music and have liked them. One of the hardest things to do in this industry is to market themselves and get with the right producer. Even though they say there is no "payola" there is still considerable influence in this industry and you won't get heard unless you have the right people in play. There are some great bands and solo singers who went and made themselves into their own producer and marketed their own stuff,,,,it's an uphill battle for sure but one thing they wanted is to direct and own their own stuff. Can hardly blame them for that.

Re: Ever heard of "The Tragically Hip"?
I am not a huge fan of the Hip, but I like most of their stuff. The first band that came to mind for me was Rush. I don't think they hit it really big in the US like they did around the world.

Re: Ever heard of "The Tragically Hip"?
Really? I didn't think they were that big compared to Canada and places in Europe. I guess I'll have to work on the whole "Think then type" thing.

Ya, Rush is huge. I'm not a big fan though...not sure why though. Perhaps I should give them another try.

Re: Ever heard of "The Tragically Hip"?
There were a bunch of bands that were huge in Canada but never saw much success in the US.
Teenage Head - promoters said they would be better for the US market if they changed their name to Teenage Heads. One album under that name and they disappeared. Chilliwack Headpins Streetheart Honeymoon Suite Toronto Max Webster Yes, Saga was huge in Europe (Germany especially). Larry Gowan had a quite a good career in Canada in the '80s. Now, he is keyboard player for Styx. Canada was also a great supporter of bands from the UK that would get successful in the US years later. The Police and Supertramp had huge followings in Canada before they struck gold in the US. Now, The Hip..... in my best Don Cherry voice,...... Good old band from Kingston eh! never saw them live, but have most of their CDs. I think Fully Completely was their best.
