My cable bill is starting to look a little high for someone who thinks he doesn't watch a lot of TV. I already have Time Warner's digital package + HBO. Last weekend I added DVR for an additional $7 a month. I'm sure most of you are way ahead of me on the curve, but for those of you who are still sitting on the fence, I thought I'd record my impressions (so to speak).

I decided to get DVR (digital video recording) because there were several TV shows I wanted to watch but they're on at inconvenient times. In particular, BBC America has an annoying habit of broadcasting several episodes, sometimes an entire season, of a good show in the wee small hours of the weekday morning. I have a VCR, but it's awkward to use in conjunction with a cable box and the recording quality is poor.

I had to change out my existing digital cable box for a new one with DVR capability (basically an on-board hard drive). The programming is really simple, the recording quality is digital, and there are lots of convenient little features that I wasn’t aware of, like being able to pause live television or record a show from the beginning even when it’s already half way through.

I’m really happy with the results. Now there’s always something good to watch when I have time to settle down in front of the telly. I think it’s a good value for my entertainment $.

Re: Dvr

get rid of it the thing is satan. i never spent so much time watching one damn show until i got this thing. every time the kids come in "i pause" take a leak "i pause" cook supper "i pause" you get the point. it ends up taking 2 1/2 hours just to watch CSI. but its great during football season or during TUF.

Re: Dvr

I know how ya feel about the bill $$$! I have HD, DVR, Digital Phone, Cable modem, etc. IMO, pay channels like HBO are not worth it without DVR. Now, I can watch what I want, when I want. Sure is nice to fast forward through commercials!

Re: Dvr

The, newer, digital cable set-ups are crazy. I have Verizon cable with a HD/DVR box. DVR and rewinding live TV is worth the price alone. Searching for when a movie comes on a particular channel so that I can record it in HD is nice too.

I had Brighthouse, and it was pretty similar, I just got a great deal on a ISP/cable package.

Re: Dvr

I turned an extra computer into a DVR so now my cable comes to my computer, gets captured there, then goes out over my network. It works really well and my recordings are limited only by hard drive space. It's also cool because I can burn recordings to dvd for transport, etc.

The software I'm running is gvpvr http://www.gbpvr.com/

I use a Hauppauge video capture card and a Hauppauge MediaMVP to covert the video coming over my network back to a signal the TV can use.

Re: Dvr

DVR kicks a$$, but yes, you will spend way too much time in front of the tube.

Re: Dvr

The DVR is a life saver with kids. I set up season passes for my son's (he's 2) favorite shows, then when he decides he just HAS to watch Wonder Pets, it's there. Also, it seems that all Lodge meetings in the area are set up to occur at the exact times my favorite shows come on. I think it's in the bylaws. Now I don't even have to remember to put in a tape or dvd...it takes care of everthing. Laziness at it's best.
