Grilling Question

Hey guys,

Quick question to the grillers out there. My wife recently got me a Charcoal Companion Stainless Steel smoker box that I can use with my gas grill. I tried it out tonight, worked pretty well, but now it's got burn marks all over it from the grill. I should mention that I put that sucker as close to the flames as I can get it. Do I need to worry about rust? Should I just chuck the thing and get something else? I've been grilling for a while now but this is my first venture into smoker boxes. Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Grilling Question

Stainless steel or not, I've never had anything on the grill not rust up. Maybe all that heat. I run through 1 smoke box a year, but I do a lot of smoking and bbqing. A true smoker may work better but I'm fine with my grill and box.

Note on your SS grill. While the grill is SS all the screws, handles, etc are not. All the money I spent and still have rough looking grill. You might try clear nail or another such type clear sealer, but a moot point I believe.

Re: Grilling Question

Use it until it starts to rust too badly, then get another. I've yet to see a gas grill that doesn't need it's guts replaced every once in awhile. If you want to smoke wood chips and not worry about rust, get a Weber kettle and a bag of charcoal

Re: Grilling Question

Those smoker boxes are pretty inexpensive. Just use it until it falls apart and get another one. You'll drive yourself crazy trying to prevent rust and fail every time. Keep the smoker box empty and dry after use is the best you can hope for. Even worst case you'll get 2-3 seasons of daily use out of it.

I replace my smokebox at least once a year, it seems

Re: Grilling Question

I use a cast iron smoker box. It does rust up, but does not seem to effect anything and to me it seems a lot stronger than a stainless one.
