Harvey & Son - Russian Imperial Double Stout - 2001
Now THIS is a stout. First sip overwhelms. I got an overpowering sense of soy sauce - complete with the salt. (My wife agreed.) After a few sips, I got accustomed to that and was able to enjoy the underlying flavors. The body was very thick and meaty, with a lingering aftertaste. Unlike a lot of other stouts, there wasn't any coffee or chocolate. Just thick, rich, and syrupy. The flavors were impossible to separate, perhaps due to good melding because of the aging. Overall, a very fine stout, but at $4 a 12oz bottle, and the overwhelmingness, not something to be enjoyed daily. |
