NY State Wines

Anyone here enjoy wines from upstate NY ? here in Rochester i'm not very far from wine country, the finger lakes region of NY, so of course we have plenty of the local wine. One of my favorite vineyards, is called Casa Larga. they have a few different wines that I like. my favorite wine for dinner is their Dolce Bianco white. very sweet, light white wine.

anyway, the point of this. I had a couple bottles of their Cab-Merlot blend, and it is a nice dark red, with some woody flavors, very smooth. it's an excellent wine to have with a nice stogie. I perfer maduro cigars anyway, but this wine is pretty full bodied, and goes well with a nice full bodied cigar, like a brazillia

Another red that i like is called "classic red" from another local, Hunt Country vineyards.

Of course I like non-NY wines too Nothing like a nice Shiraz with a steak. Little Penguin is one of my fav's for that

Anyway, that's it, just thought I'd share a couple wines I like. If you get a chance to try some wine from the Finger Lakes of NY, there are many great ones to try

Re: NY State Wines

The only N.Y.wine I ever drank, to my knowledge, was Mogen David Concord Grape. We used it for communion wine, never did figure why had to use a kosher wine at a Lutheran church.
One night when I was 16-17 I and a couple of friends lifted a half gallon after our Luther League meeting and took it out to the local drag strip and got right into it,chasing it down with some warm Coors that had been bouncing around in my trunk for a week or two. Needless to say the half gallon outlasted us.

Long Island has several vineyards. When I drive to Hamptons, I pass a lot of them after the ferry from CT. I think it's mostly white wine.

Actually, there are quite a few reds out on Long Island. They do merlot very well, the climate seems to agree with it.

My uncle lives near Ithaca, NY, and knows the local wineries well. I always look forward to visiting with him b/c I know he always has a good stock of the local wines. I don't know any particular wineries that stand out, but I know the Rieslings from the region are outstanding. But I've also enjoyed some quality reds from the area, as well.

Re: NY State Wines

If you want to travel west a little distance, to the very north-east corner of Ohio (about 7 miles from Erie, Pennsylvania), you will find the town of Geneva, which hosts a grape/wine festival every fall. There are several vineyards there, but my wife and I particularily enjoy the offerings from Ferrante, and then those from DeBonne Vineyards. Both are in an area called the "Grand River Valley". Ferrente seems to have a wider selection than DeBonne, but if you enjoy Ice Wine, both have true Ice Wines, made from grapes frozen on the vine. I am amazed at the wine snobs running the local wine stores in Alabama that will swear to me that true ice wine can only be obtained from Italy and France; with me having two cases of Ohio's Ice Wine offerings sitting in my house!

My wife and I will have to give the New York wineries a try the next time we are in the NE area of the US. I am constantly amazed at the great quality of wine coming from states other than California (not a slap at California wines). I guess since the crops and vintages are much smaller than Napa Valley offerings, there isn't much available for marketing outside of the local regions, so we don't hear much about the alternatives!

Thanks for the heads-up!
