Ducks and Rockets equals fun!

I just got back from a trip to Honduras and Nicaragua to finish up the finalize the new "Live" cigar by Gran Habano. Earlier in the week I had a chance to meet Alex Svenson of Cigar.com in Danli, Honduras and the plans were made for a duck hunting trip.

George and I finished up in Honduras and made our way to Nicaragua for a chance to get away and have some fun. Guillermo Rico had a friend that was gracious enough to take us on a duck hunt. We made our way into Esteli, Nicaragua and picked up Alex and some boots.

We headed to the rice fields and made our way to a boat. With shotguns on hand we cruised down Rio Viejo as we searched for ducks. As we hunted along the river Guillermo, George, Alex, and I had tons of fun and the landscapes were amazing. With our kill in hand Alex explained to us the finer techniques of breasting a bird.

I can tell from the hunt that Guillermo and George are hooked on duck hunting. Since it was my first time hunting duck it was cool to have Alex there to explain how to lead the duck and the safety of shooting with others. It was also a treat to get to talk to Alex about some of his favorite cigars such as the 5 Vegas Series. I think I did Ok since it seemed sort of natural being from Texas.

After the trip we made our way to a hut where we were introduced to these special rockets used for clearing rice fields of ducks. The ducks go at night to eat the rice and farmers use these rockets to scare away the ducks. Here are some pictures of Alex and George lighting the rockets.

I wanted to thank Guillermo and George for setting the duck hunt up and for having me along for the fun.

If you guys ever make it to PA I have an interest in a game preserve in Tioga County that is lush and prime for birds. We do driven shoots and the property is the site for the US Target Open in 2011. There is a golf course style range and the phesants are incredible. If your ever interested PM me.

That's too funny, Stogie! My dad used something similar (but much less labor intensive) back in the '70's & '80's when he farmed some land that the owner also leased out to deer hunters. It was a series of propane fueled cannons that would "blast" every 30 minutes or hour (I forget). It worked great at first, but then the deer got used to it and would stand 50 yards from the cannon when it would make it's loud blast. They'd just look up at it and then continue eating the crops.

Looks like you had a smoking good time on the trip. Dare I say you had a blast?
