Minnesota Sucks!

Minnesota sucks! if you want to be a cigar smoker, well i guess cigarette smoker too... I knew that we had it bad with the whole 70% tax on wholesale price for tobacco... however I was unaware of how this compared with the rest of the states until today. on Vitolas website he has the cigar tax by state and BAM Minnesota has the 2nd highest to Alaska! check how you compare at http://www.vitolas.net/displayimage.php?pos=-761

Now, as if that wasn't bad enough, almost doubling the price of premium cigars at local B&M's now they are making the entire state smoke free! there are, I believe, 3 exceptions to this, Smoke shops (B&M), Farms... and one other location that i don't remember. I wish I could support my local B&M more, however it is hard to pay 2X the cost per box as i can find online!

Now if the federal excise tax goes into effect Minnesotans can expect to pay up to 3X MSRP... Good luck! It truely will be a hobby enjoyed by the rich, and all of the B&M's will close...

On the tax grid look at Washington to the right. I feel your pain.

I actually goto Minny a bit and whenever I talk to people at a B&M there and tell them I live in Washington, we have something in common.

With the doom on the horizon though, I will keep the current Washington tax rates in a heart shaped frame next to my bed if they stay somewhat the same.

I think the 32% in MI is bad but the talk is that they want to double it to 64% soon.

Looks like Washington and Oregon at least have a 50c cap. Still obscene, though.

No tobacco tax on cigars in New Hampshire. No sales tax on any purchase. No state income tax, either.


We pay in other ways, though.

Yep, 10,000 lakes and 10,000 taxes. Other than the smoking ban, there are many positives to living up here. I can't figure out how this smoking ban got passed. It failed twice in the legislature and then somehow many of the Representatives that had opposed it voted for it. You can bet that mine will hear about it the next time I see him. Smoking bans suck, leave it up to the owner. If there's that much of a market for non-smoking establishments, then they will fill that need. If it's that big of a problem for the employees, then those workers will go to smoke free establishments and smoking establishments will have to pay more to get workers. Or, just require air exchange equipment big enough to meet the size of the establishment, they already have to meet all other kinds of federal and state regulations. Just my rant!

Wait...the same collection of people that elected Jesse Ventura governor also have elected legislators that have levied outlandish taxes? Never would have seen that coming...geeze...

Where have all of you guys been the last 4 yrs.. I called my senator and rep and E mailed the Gov. on the tobacco tax that was passed to help balance the budget,,I also called the same people about this mean spirited tobacco ban.. After the last election when the democrats were put back in power in Minnesota it was widely written that this would now be the time to get this tobacco legislation passed so with the majority of democrats and a few stupid republicans the measure overwhelmingly passed .. Now this anti smoking alliance will trot off to the next state that they can work on to get the same legislation passed,,until all the states (which they will) fall to the hysteria. But that won't be enough,,there will be other legislation ,,like smoking in the car with children and in the home with children,smoking in condominiums/apts,Parks, golf courses, beaches etc.and more taxes on tobacco products will be on the horizon. So all the bitching in the world will not stop this snowball from getting bigger. The only thing that would have worked is if 10,000 smokers showed up at the capital to protest then the cowardly politicians would have backed down,,when there is no protest then it is easy for them to vote in this shit..As far as the positives to living up here I guess I missed most of them..
