Cool Bead Holder
I got my first batch of humidity beads in a trade yesterday. Trying to come up with a solution as to how to hold them on my desk top humidors that I liked. I checked out the stickyed Thread about replacing the foam in the existing humidifiers and liked it but wanted to be able to see the beads color so that I could better moniter thier saturation. I had a small 100 or 50 sized Crystal humidifier from a company called Madelaine that was filled with gel but the plastic housing is clear with a piece of stainless steele screen over the gel. Well I carefuly took it apart washed the gel out and filled it with beads. Problem solved. Holds just the right amount for my small 25ct humi and I can see the color of the beads perfectly. I liked it so much that I went out and bought the 250 sized one for my larger Diamond Crown Biltmore humidor. The glue was heavier on the 250 unit but with careful prying with a very thin screwdriver it came apart perfectly. When I reassmbled it, just a little super glue put it back together. These units look like they were made just for the beads. Not sure if anyone else has used these but they work fantastic.

My camera is on the fritz right now. But a google search of madelaine humidifier will bring up pics of the ones I used.

Re: Cool Bead Holder
If you use a (digital) hygrometer, you don't need to look at the color of the beads -- just wait until you see the humidity consistently below the specified RH for a week or two. That's what I do -- my humidor stays consistently at 65%, and when it drops to 63% for a week or more, I rehydrate the beads.

Re: Cool Bead Holder
Looks good to me. I just modified my existing humidifier but I think that you made a good call.

I use a digital hygromiter. My main concern was making sure that I didnt over do it with the water, and run into issues because of that. Another benifit of the madelaine unit is that the entire front of it is open allowing more bead surface exposed. Just my thoughts on why I chose this route. I'm very pleased with it. |
