Beetles...They do exist

I was doing some reorganization in preparation for an incoming shipment. I came across 1 cigar that was isolated in a zip lock and had been there since I arrived home from Grand Caymen in June. I noticed a small hole in it, kept it in the zip lock bag, and I figured I'd let it die a fiery death tonight. So, when I went back to get it tonight, I noticed the beetle crawling around inside the bag.

This is the second hole I've seen since establishing a large collection. The other time, the cigar never made it into my humidor. I completely dissected it and found nothing but a couple of tunnels in the tobacco. This time, I thought I would just smoke it, especially since it was a CC Partagas.

Then, when I saw the beetle crawling around, I started to dissect. Not the whole cigar, but an inch at a time starting from the foot. I don't have any pictures of the cigar, but I saved the bugs and larva. Here's the pics.

I am not going into freezing mode since I believe this was contained to one CC that was in a zip lock. I will be checking daily. The box was completely cleaned out today and I didn't notice any other contamination.

FWIW, this box has been at about under 70* and about 67% humidity for months.

Hopefully it is just an isolated event. Those pics are like a nightmare.

DAAAAANG!!!! That's ugly , scary, and no one needs to ever experience that. . . that looks like a story parent would tell their children to scare them into taking care of their cigars. . . hope you have it contained.

I am pretty sure it isn't necessary. The bag was completely sealed and it's the only cigar that showed any evidence. I emptied the whole humi out today and inspected every stick before returning it.

Also, I really cant imagine freezing 8-900 cigars. I will check these daily, and if I notice anything, trust me, they will all go in the freezer.

Wow hate seeing those little bastards, that sucks. I wouldn't freeze the rest of the sticks since it was isolated, plus theres somthing about throwing quality cigars into a freezer just doesn't seem right..

Re: Beetles...They do exist

The fact that this one was sealed in a bag probably led to a different humidity and maybe even temp. Hope your safe.

Scary!!! I'm gonna have bad dreams tonight!

Seriously though, that really sucks! I hope it was only the one that's contaminated.

Re: Beetles...They do exist

What a bummer....Thank God the rest of the collection is hopefully safe, but if the beetles only ruined one cigar then gosh darnit thats still one too many. The only thing beetles are good for is revolutionizing music!
