Does insurance cover cigars?

I have renters insurance and was wondering if they would cover my Cuban Cigars. Does anyone know? I don't think I could go on living if anything was to happen to them.

I'm not in insurance, but IMO I doubt it because you specified Cuban cigars which are illegal for you to possess as an American citizen which I am assuming you are. I'm sure some more knowledgeable will chime in though. Regular cigars I think could be covered depending on how your policy reads.

Pretty well summed up for a non insurance guy, that being said from an insurance guy.

Great link posted on this discussion that took place a week or so ago.

However, food for thought. If they are pre-embargo cc's and all you have is photos to prove you owned them? No box codes/dates to see? Different discussion all together. Just a bad thought from a guy whose living is from catching insurance fraud.

y or crs, here's the tale

A Charlotte, North Carolina man, having purchased a box of 24 rare and very expensive cigars, insured them against... fire. Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of fabulous cigars, and having yet to make a single premium payment on the policy, the man filed a claim against the insurance company.
In his claim, the man stated that he had lost the cigars in "a series of small fires." The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason: that the man had consumed the cigars in a normal fashion. The man sued, and won.
In delivering his ruling, the judge stated that the man held a policy from the company in which it was warranted that the cigars were insurable. The company, in the policy, had also guaranteed that it would insure the cigars against fire, without defining what it considered to be "unacceptable fire," and so, the company was obligated to compensate the insured for his loss. Rather than endure a lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the judge's ruling and paid the man $15,000 for the rare cigars he had lost in "the fires." However, shortly after the man cashed his check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of arson. With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case used as evidence against him, the man was convicted of intentionally burning the rare cigars and sentenced to 24 consecutive one-year prison terms

This is a good topic...although I think it would be very hard to get an insurance company to pay for lost cigars.... I mean how would you prove what you had in stock at the time of the fire?

No different than any other personal item claimed lost for a covered peril.
You supply receipts, photos, video, manuals, anything that can show you in fact owned it.

As a good idea, I recommend everyone photo and video everthing in your home of value and update it regularly. Best if you can store it in a safe or in a safety deposit box in the bank (the latter is what I do).

We understand many do not keep receipts so where we cannot get them, we ask for this type of photo proof. Large items from major stores? No getting out of that one as we know most stores are now computerized and will have a copy available for you.

I could be way off here, but it's my understanding that the only illegality concerning Cuba is with spending money there or on Cuban goods in other countries. For example, we can all legally travel to Cuba. We just can't buy anything there.

Does anyone have a definitive answer on whether or not the possession of CCs is illegal? For example if they were gifted by a non-US citizen. I'd really be curious to know. If the answer is yes, it seems that a lot of people use little discretion on the boards about their own consumption of them.

For an American citizen, Yes. Unless they are Pre-Embargo Cubans, then I don't know positively. It is illegal for an American citizen to smoke a Cuban cigar ANYWHERE I believe, but I could be way off base. As far as travel goes for Americans going to Cuba. I also believe there has to be a VERY good explanation as to why you are going there in order to get approval to travel there. Again I am just going what I have read and heard discussed here before, and all this only applies to Americans.

This link breaks it down better than I can. http://www.ustreas.gov/offices/enfor...uba/cuba.shtml

Sorry for the threadjack

You are absolutely correct.
Big misconception that we cannot fly to Cuba from the US.

However, just wait until you try getting back in and you are greeted by US Customs.
You are not going to have a nice time at all
