So anyways a little pre-story thing:
I have only one local shop in my town that carries good smokes. I go there quite frequently and try new gars and sometimes even sit in there and read a magazine or talk to the guys who work there, most of them are my age and are real nice guys. Manager is an older gentleman, but we as well get along very well.
They have a good selection and most things are prominently displayed, box opened and a price tag on each gar. There are certain things tho, that are not right in your face and you have to reach up on the shelves and pull the closed box down yourself, but also have been tagged so obviously are meant to be on sale. Infact, i know they are because I take the boxes down all the time and alot of the times buy those. Make sense? Good..

Why I'm Pissed:
So anyways I go in there on Friday night, mid-delivery (Im a delivery guy, and the people's whos food I was delivering always stiff me, so i always go do something before bringing them their food.) So i'm in the humi browsing around and an older gentlemen who I've never seen walks into the humidor and says to me "You shouldnt be digging around up there, can I help you with something?"

Confused and a little offended I ask him if he's the owner or something because Ive never seen him and he tells me he his. I explain to him that the box I was looking at was already opened and had prices on every single and that I didnt undertstand the problem, I do this every day practically and have never once had a problem. He acts as though im lying and pulls them down himself to double check me. Sure enough they are and he just sorta shrugs and puts them back up there. So now this guy's pissed me off but hes not done yet..

After all of this, this guy just stands over me practically, periodically acting like he's straightening up cigars in the box, but I KNOW he's only in there to make sure I dont steal anything, cuz hes barely taking his eyes off of me.
Finally after about a minute of this, I turn around and say something along the lines of
"Sir, I realize your the owner, but your never in here and obviously don't know who your regulars are because I spend hundreds of dollars here a month, and i know your in here watching me because you think I'm stealing... well im not, so I dont know what you want but.."
He never denies it, adds he was trying to help me make a selection or some BS and then walks out.

I know I'm younger than most average cigar smokers, and really dont even look like one, but I was very offended by this whole ordeal and told his partner, the guy who really actually RUNS the place and he laughed and apologized and explained he's an asshole and told me he appreciates my buisness. So anyways thats my story. Still not sure what Im gonna do if anything... but does this happen to any younger smokers? Maybe its just me cause I look like a hoodlum or something, or maybe Im just over-reacting.

Well Paul, I'm 31 yrs old and dress pretty normal and I get that from the Owner of a Local Shop that I frequent maybe Once a month. The Owners comment about you checking out the Top shelf was Pretty Lame but going in to the Humi and keeping an eye on you is fairly normal considering the Value of the Merchandise and the fact that he doesn't know you. Maybe if he spent more time in his Shop he wouldn't be so Paranoid around his regulars.

This isn't anything new. I'm 29 and look pretty clean cut. Been in a few stores and usually get a strange look like I must have accidentally gone into the wrong store or don't know what I'm doing.

It pisses me off too, but I don't think there is much you can do about it.

I hear ya Jeff. It's like if your not bald and over 50 they look at you strange. The thing is usually when I am in a store thats usually the type of Customer standing next to me.

Well thats something you have to decide for yourself..I can only say what I would do and that is anytime I'm made to feel uncomfortable somewhere I don't come back.

I wouln't come back and let " the guy who really runs the store know " Shop on line or somewhere else, and save your receipts. Mail a copy to them, to let them know that there crap cost them. There's a nice cigar shop here in P-Town in the twin towers dowtown. The Lady that owns and runs it lets you browse the Humidor all day long if you wanted to. You bring your sticks out and she ask you the price, Great lady and enjoy going in there. I'm not even 50 and bald yet . Husband and Her ran it for years and when her Husband past away, she kept it going.

I'm a young'un I guess. I'm 20 and still have all my hair. lol But I have gotten that look once or twice, where the guys in the shop wonder if I'm even old enough to buy a cigar. This is when I walk right up to them, this makes them uncomfortable for a second or two which is hilarious to see the look on their face, and I smile and introduce myself and tell them why I'm there. Then usually I don't have any more problems. As a matter of fact, the folks know me by name down at my local shop now. There are even a couple of out of state shops where they know who I am and remember me but maybe don't remember my name. I remember the funniest thing, I was at a tobacco shop that was mostly known for cigarettes but I thought I would go in and see if they had anything worth smoking. Turns out they had a whole bundle of Cohiba Churchill Seconds. They only wanted like $20 for them and I needed something to fill up the humi with so I bought the whole bundle. The lady behind the desk eyeballed me like I had leprosy or something. Didn't speak a word to me except to tell me how much I owed. As I was walking out of the store she said, "Don't get sick off of them." Or some crap like that which just made me laugh and proceed to my car.

Hey Paul it happens to all of us, just blow it off and roll with the punches! Just realize you have a local shop that u like cuz there are a bunch of other gorillas on the board that dont have a shop like the one u described, or have to drive 30-45 min to get to one. Just my $.02
