The beads actually hold very little water. Notice that most people recommend you "spray" the beads with water.
If your humidor "needs" moisture, whether because you added a bunch of new cigars or added cedar or because it's new or whatever, it may suck all the moisture out of the beads, leaving them dry. I was happy with the beads for a little while, but after experimentation with another humidor, I've discovered that the gel jars work much better. I've just gone as far as buying the gel in bulk and created my own humidifiers with it and gotten rid of the beads. It's only been a week so far, but it's working pretty well so far. .
